4 TV shows that will probably be cancelled in 2025

As a long-time fan of heartwarming and thoughtful storytelling, I have eagerly followed the rise of various shows that resonate with audiences across the globe. Among them, “Heartstopper” stands out as one of the most impactful and beloved series to grace our screens in recent years.

2024 has undeniably been a standout year for television. It shone particularly bright amidst the postponement of several movies to 2025, creating a spotlight that television seized and made the most of. Over time, we’ve witnessed television consistently outshine in similar circumstances.

2021 was the year that saw the comeback of heavyweights such as “House of the Dragon”, “Heartstopper”, “Squid Game”, “Outer Banks”, and many others, keeping the internet buzzing with significant events. Similarly, HBO’s “The Penguin” garnered attention, being a gripping new installment in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” Epic Crime Saga, which held viewers spellbound during its eight-episode duration.

This year, Marvel Studios made a strong comeback. First, they introduced their first binge-style series titled “Echo,” which garnered anticipation. Then, they surprised everyone with the critically acclaimed continuation of the classic series, “X-Men ’97” – a long-awaited sequel to “X-Men: The Animated Series.” The excitement didn’t stop there as they also released “Agatha All Along,” a highly anticipated spinoff of the Emmy-winning show “WandaVision.” To top it all off, they are currently airing the third and final season of their popular series “What If…?”.

Regrettably, some shows were unexpectedly terminated this year, including favorites like Dead Boy Detectives, The Acolyte, Chucky, and That ’90s Show. Network decisions led to the early endings of The CW’s most popular shows, Walker and Superman and Lois as well. This barely scratches the surface, underscoring yet again how cancellations might be more common than ever in today’s era of endless television and abundant choices.

2025 seems promising for TV shows, but I can’t help but worry about some favorites potentially getting axed. Some might be abruptly ended midstream, while others could get a final-season reprieve. Let’s start with a series dear to many hearts that might get swallowed up by a new multiverse.

4 TV shows that will probably be cancelled in 2025

Harley Quinn

The DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran has officially been unveiled, starting with an adult-oriented animated series that’s garnering positive feedback on Max. Unlike many shared universes which typically launch with a live-action film, the debut of “Creature Commandos” demonstrates the wide scope of the upcoming DC Studios DC Universe, encompassing television, films, animation, live-action, and even video games. Although a cinematic Superman is in the works, Gunn and Safran are showcasing the versatility of their universe with this launch.

The future looks promising, yet there are lingering concerns about the remnants of the past DC leadership’s vision. As for the TV department, it seems quite similar to Harley Quinn in terms of its unique standing. The show is the sole survivor of the brief-lived DC Universe streaming service, outlasting its platform due to its popularity and transitioning to WarnerMedia streamer Max (previously HBO Max). It has also persisted through the Warner Bros. / Discovery merger, being one of the few DC shows to secure a renewal for another season – not once, but twice! Most recently, it was granted a season 5 renewal.

It’s indisputable that Max finds the animated series a huge hit and success, but this doesn’t alter the truth that the DC Universe has officially debuted with a show that bears many resemblances. The issue is that Harley Quinn, despite not being part of the canon in the expanded DC Universe (which encompasses animated productions), could potentially be at risk for cancellation. Even though DC Studios appeared content to let a few DC shows continue when they unveiled their shared universe, this doesn’t mean they didn’t decide to prematurely wrap up Superman and Lois to steer clear of any potential rivalry with their upcoming Superman film.

Regarding Harley Quinn, one of the few DC properties not considered part of the main canon, it might face cancellation to pave the way for the new DC Universe. Even if it doesn’t, completing five seasons places the show in veteran territory, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if its run came to an end with this season or if a sixth and final season renewal was granted.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

If you find yourself on this list and wondering “But didn’t they say She-Hulk was still going on?”, then let me clarify that we’re discussing an official announcement that hasn’t been made yet. On the other hand, if your question is “Has She-Hulk been cancelled?”, I regret to inform you that recent developments point towards its absence in the MCU as of now.

Initially, the series debuted on Disney Plus in 2022 and appeared to be a triumph, but over time, a contrasting narrative has emerged. The absence of a renewal was not concerning at first since most Marvel shows were initially presented as limited series until Loki defied this pattern. Now, it’s reported that the studio is contemplating reviving some of its original productions for additional seasons. There are whispers about several shows, with numerous sources suggesting that Moon Knight and Hawkeye might make a comeback in the upcoming years. What they all seem to concur upon, however, is that She-Hulk has secretly been terminated by the studio.

Previously this year, actress Tatiana Maslany hinted at the uncertainty of another season, replying to a fan inquiry with: “I don’t believe so… I think we exhausted our budget, and Disney said something like, ‘nope!'” While not explicitly saying the show won’t resurface, her statement seems to align with speculations about the potential challenges for She-Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given the high production costs associated with a sitcom featuring a giant CGI Hulk across nine episodes, success was likely a necessity.

If the gossips are accurate, She-Hulk may have secretly been terminated. However, an official announcement might still emerge – perhaps a statement from Kevin Feige or one of the actors confirming that there are no further seasons in development. This could potentially happen as soon as next year.

Batman: Caped Crusader

Don’t worry, Batman fans! The second season of “Batman: Caped Crusader” is still upcoming. Originally produced for WarnerMedia streamer Max, the show was rescued by Amazon’s Prime Video and given a two-season chance to prove itself. However, the question remains whether it can continue past that point or not.

This summer, the animated series debuted to generally favorable reception and a touch of excitement from fans, yet there was one significant concern overshadowing it (and no, it wasn’t related to a bat). Although Amazon Prime Video now controls its destiny, the series is still rooted in the original DC leadership’s vision, which means it needs to work much harder than expected. It’s important to note that The CW was producing Superman and Lois at the time, but Warner Bros. and DC were ultimately responsible for ending the show after season 4; not The CW. Is there a possibility that the same scenario might unfold here?

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the return of DCU’s Batman, although it might be a while before we see him again. Since DC Studios seems to prefer having only one animated Batman, the Caped Crusader could potentially continue his adventures and secure a Season 3 renewal down the line, provided Amazon Prime Video is on board too. After all, rules are often bent when it comes to the Dark Knight!

When it initially aired, the program sparked considerable excitement, underscoring Prime Video’s increasing dominance in the superhero streaming realm. Yet, it didn’t elicit the same degree of excitement as Prime Video’s homegrown hit, Invincible, which consistently shatters the web with each new episode release. While it may be unrealistic to compare every project from the streamer, given that Caped Crusader is a Batman series, one could argue that there might have been higher anticipation due to its association with such an iconic character.

We hope not, because Batman: Caped Crusader has been one of the most refreshing shows of the year.

Heartstopper (likely renewed for a final season)

Heartstopper, currently among the world’s most cherished shows, delivers an essential narrative on modern television. Given its widespread popularity and impactful content, fans eagerly anticipate a satisfying conclusion to its storyline. It’s speculated that a fourth and final season renewal may be announced for 2025.

The critically-acclaimed series made its debut on Netflix in 2022, quickly securing a two-season renewal within just a month. The strong buzz and high viewership transformed it into a worldwide sensation, propelling the careers of all its young cast members. Lead actors Joe Locke and Kit Connor experienced life-changing events almost immediately, and each season brought new opportunities their way. Their talents were further recognized in the third season, which delved into more complex narratives.

The beloved tale of Nick and Charlie’s romance, which captivated audiences since its debut on screens (and touched our hearts), seems unlikely to continue past a fourth season. Although no official confirmation has been made, recent developments about the show’s potential ending have left fans feeling uneasy. However, considering the impressive success of the third season and the creator Alice Oseman’s expressed intention to conclude the series after four seasons, another renewal seems probable.

Regardless of whether a fourth season materializes, the absence of fresh Heartstopper episodes will be noticeable when the series eventually ends, as its charm and enchantment would undeniably leave an empty space in our viewing experience.
