4 shows that were surprisingly good in 2024

As someone who has been around the block a few times when it comes to entertainment, I must say that 2024 has been quite the rollercoaster ride, but it’s not all doom and gloom! In fact, this year has brought us some truly unexpected gems in the world of television. Here are five shows that I never thought I’d love as much as I did!

Is it hard to accept that we’re bidding farewell to the year 2024? I don’t think I’m the only one feeling this way, as 2024 has been quite a rollercoaster, even erratic at moments. Yet, it was an exceptional year in terms of entertainment, and that’s what we’ll be highlighting in this post – the bright side!

Among the top TV series this year, several stand out. Yet, here are five shows that surprised us by capturing our hearts more than anticipated.

4 shows that were surprisingly good in 2024

Presumed Innocent

1st on my list is “Presumed Innocent,” which can be streamed on Apple TV+. I’m quite fond of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, who are part of the cast in this legal thriller. However, I wasn’t particularly excited about watching it since I thought if you’ve seen one crime thriller, you’ve seen them all. But let me tell you, it had been a while since a series in that genre caught my attention. From the very first scene, I was hooked and fully captivated.

The TV show “Presumed Innocent” is adapted from the 1987 novel by Scott Turow, sharing the same title. The narrative revolves around Rusty (Gyllenhaal), a former prosecutor who finds himself on trial for murder after the corpse of his lover and colleague is discovered. As viewers, we are drawn into the mystery, only to find that just when we think we have cracked the case, the series adds another unexpected twist. “Presumed Innocent” proves to be a gripping drama from start to finish, with twists I didn’t see coming.

Baby Reindeer

Now remember, this list isn’t about the best shows of the year. I’m listing great shows that I was not expecting to enjoy. That said, Baby Reindeer is not my personal favorite, but it did have me in a chokehold for weeks and weeks! I decided to stream it because everyone was talking about it. And yes, it was very much worth the hype.

The psychological thriller is centered around the real-life events of Richard Gadd, both writer and lead actor in this series. He portrays a character named Donny Dunn, who shares similarities with himself. Donny Dunn is an aspiring comic battling a stalker named Martha. However, the authorities don’t seem to take his situation seriously. The story sheds light on the harrowing ordeal Gadd experienced for years due to Martha’s stalking and harassment.

If you missed out on watching Baby Reindeer when it first came out this year, there’s no time like the present to catch up! You can stream it on Netflix now.

The Penguin

I’m quite fond of DC Comics and recognize The Penguin as one of Batman’s most renowned adversaries. Yet, since 2024, I’ve been battling a sense of exhaustion with superhero stories – it’s been a while since I found enjoyment in a Marvel or DC series. As such, when news broke about The Penguin, it wasn’t an immediate addition to my watch list. In truth, I didn’t start streaming the crime drama on Max until there were three episodes available.

As a devoted fan, let me tell you that The Penguin stands out as one of the most impressive shows I’ve watched this year, hands down! Unlike some other series, you don’t need to have seen 2022’s The Batman to follow along with The Penguin. In fact, you can jump right into it without needing a deep understanding of the DCEU’s history. So if you’ve been holding off on watching The Penguin because of that, now there’s no reason left not to dive in!

Constellation

Once more, my initial assessment of Apple TV+ was hasty. I can be quite particular when it comes to sci-fi series, as there aren’t many that truly resonate with me. However, I find myself eagerly anticipating another viewing of Constellation. It’s a captivating show that might have left you missing some intricate details the first time around.

The series Constellation revolves around astronaut Johanna “Jo” Ericsson, played by Noomi Rapace, upon her return from a mission that didn’t succeed as planned. Initially, she is grateful to be alive, but she notices that many aspects of her life and the people surrounding her have changed in ways she doesn’t recognize. To fully appreciate the series, it’s best if you go in with minimal knowledge. Brace yourself for numerous gasps, tears, and a rollercoaster of emotions.
