4 overrated Halloween movies you should skip this spooky season

As a seasoned horror aficionado who’s spent countless Halloweens huddled under blankets while watching terrifying films, I can confidently say that some Halloween movies are more “boo”-ble than they are actually scary. This year, I’m shedding light on four overrated Halloween flicks that might just leave you yawning rather than screaming in terror!

As All Hallows’ Eve draws near, many people are searching for the ideal movie to create an eerie atmosphere, a film that sends chills down the spine and provides ample thrills. Yet, not every movie is worth your valuable watching time. In truth, some widely acclaimed Halloween movies are more overhyped than actually terrifying!

In 2021, we’ve identified four films often hyped up for Halloween that are arguably more “trick” than “treat.” While these movies aren’t necessarily poor productions, they may not deliver the spine-tingling suspense you crave this haunting season. Discover which Halloween movies made our less-than-favorable list!

Terrifier movies (2016-)

I must admit, I’ve got a bone to pick about including the “Terrifier” movies in our list. I’d like to make amends to all the “Terrifier” enthusiasts, but it seems these films have been given more credit than they deserve. My primary concern with them lies in their emphasis on sensationalism and graphic violence, which is a bit excessive for my taste. Granted, it’s a slasher film, but I’ve seen numerous other slashers that offer a solid plot. Unfortunately, the “Terrifier” films fall short when it comes to a well-structured narrative, making them less appealing to me.

3 movies from the “Terrifier” series have been produced thus far, with a fourth one underway. Each film revolves around the main character, the ominous and brutal Art the Clown, a mute killer who spreads fear throughout the imaginary town of Miles County by tormenting its residents.

Halloween (1978)

Let me clarify! Halloween is indeed an iconic horror film, and its impact on the genre is undeniable. Yet, certain parts of the movie may appear outdated to today’s viewers. Some people might find it less suspenseful or scary compared to modern horror standards. If you’re seeking a film that delivers maximum thrills and frights, Halloween might not live up to your expectations.

In a new town called Haddonfield, the relentless figure known as the slasher pursues Michael Myers, a maniacal murderer who dons a white mask and once resided in a mental hospital. Having broken free from his confinement, this psychopath returns to his old stomping grounds with a chilling intent: to terrorize a group of teenage babysitters.

The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist is often labeled as one of the scariest films ever produced, and indeed, it continues to be significant and impactful within the horror genre. Nonetheless, I’d contend that this movie doesn’t retain its initial impact when compared to more recent horror productions. Frankly, its dated special effects diminish its frightening effect. Yet, it’s easy to see why it was revolutionary at the time – it was among the pioneers in its genre.

In this chilling supernatural movie, a frantic mother seeks aid from not one but two clergymen, as they attempt an exorcism on her child who has been taken over by a malevolent spirit.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

In 1999, the film “The Blair Witch Project” garnered acclaim for its groundbreaking found-footage technique and was instrumental in establishing this genre’s popularity. Many viewers also believe it to be one of the most terrifying movies from the ’90s, given that it offered a unique and unsettling experience compared to other films at the time.

In my view, this movie doesn’t seem as effective in today’s era due to an excessive amount of dialogue and a lack of action. Frankly, the most terrifying moment is saved for the final scene. It seems that this film relies on nostalgia for its initial release to create fear. Over time, the horror genre has undergone substantial changes, making it difficult for some modern viewers to fully appreciate the frightening aspects of The Blair Witch Project.

Here’s the movie’s plot via IMDb:

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.
