4 new Stephen King adaptations (and 1 new book) releasing in 2025

As a dedicated Stephen King fan with over two decades of reading his works under my belt, I can confidently say that 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the master of horror! From long-awaited adaptations to original works, it’s an exciting time for us “constant readers.

Currently, it’s an exciting era for fans of Stephen King. Over the span of his impressive writing career, he has penned numerous books, several of which have been transformed into novels, films, podcasts, and even stage performances!

2021 wasn’t particularly vibrant for adaptations of King’s works, with only the critically panned “Salem’s Lot” by Max being released. However, it seems that 2025 promises to be an exceptionally thrilling year for dedicated fans of Stephen King’s novels (you know who you are).

As a devoted fan of Stephen King’s work, I can hardly contain my excitement! Not only are we getting the long-anticipated television adaptation of “The Institute” and a fresh series diving deep into the universe of ‘It’, but King himself is set to release a brand new novel! Stay tuned for updates on all the Stephen King adaptations brewing in 2025.

It: Welcome to Derry

Although it doesn’t strictly follow the format of an adaptation, “It: Welcome to Derry” is a prequel television series inspired by Stephen King’s renowned novel “It”. This novel has been brought to life in various forms before, starting with the 1990 miniseries featuring Tim Curry as Pennywise. More recently, it was adapted into Andy Muschietti’s 2017 film titled “It”, followed by the 2019 sequel, “It: Chapter Two”.

Set within the same world as Muschietti’s films, “It: Derry Begins” is an upcoming prequel TV series that unfolds before the movie events, taking its cues from the 1986 novel. Bill Skarsgård will once again portray Pennywise in this show, having previously played the character in both the 2017 and 2019 films. The cast also includes Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, and Stephen Rider. As of now, no release date has been disclosed, but HBO has confirmed the series will comprise nine episodes.

The Monkey

Director Oz Perkins, who previously worked with Neon on “Longlegs,” is teaming up with them once more to adapt a short story from Stephen King’s collection “Skeleton Crew.” In this upcoming horror film, “The Gentlemen” actor Theo James plays twin brothers Hal and Bill.

In their childhood, the siblings stumble upon an eerie, cymbal-clashing toy monkey in the attic of their household. This discovery appears to be linked with a sudden sequence of grisly deaths. Fearing any potential curse they may have unleashed, Hal and Bill choose to part ways and live separately. However, when the deaths resume, they are compelled to collaborate in order to get rid of the toy monkey permanently.

Releasing in theaters on Feb. 21, 2025.

The Institute

For quite some time now, MGM+ has been working on a series that is inspired by Stephen King’s 2019 novel about a facility where gifted children with powers such as telepathy and telekinesis reside. At the recent Content London event, MGM+ unveiled a fresh look and clips from the show in their 2025 promotional trailer for the first time.

In some more exciting news, the cabler revealed that King himself boarded the project as an executive producer. According to Variety, the trailer provides a peek at the Institute, described as a “brutalist-style building.” The show stars newcomer Joe Freeman and Mary-Louise Parker as the villainous Ms. Sigsby.

The Life of Chuck

Mike Flanagan helms this intriguing sci-fi drama movie, featuring Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Karen Gillan in key roles. The narrative is adapted from King’s novella, which can be found in his If It Bleeds compilation. This year at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the film titled The Life of Chuck made its global debut, earning favorable critic reviews. The movie offers a unique blend of genres and follows the life story of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Hiddleston), who tragically passes away at 39 due to a brain tumor.

Releasing in theaters on May 30, 2025.

Never Flinch

Lastly, King will publish his eagerly awaited next novel in 2025 – titled “Never Flinch“. This new work brings back beloved recurring character Holly Gibney, who was initially introduced in the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and has since appeared in other titles such as The Outsider, If It Bleeds, and even her own book called “Holly“. In “Never Flinch“, Holly takes on the challenge of determining whether a threatening letter about mass murder is genuine or not, and she ends up working as a bodyguard for an outspoken activist with a stalker.

Never Flinch will be published on May 27, 2025.
