4 must-read Marvel Comics to learn more about Red Hulk and Thunderbolt Ross

As a seasoned gamer and avid comic book fan, I’m thrilled about the latest developments in “Captain America: Brave New World.” The trailer was nothing short of spectacular, with Sam Wilson looking badass as the new Captain America and the introduction of potential new characters like Giancarlo Esposito and Harrison Ford.

The trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” surpassed expectations, showcasing Sam Wilson in his revamped Captain America attire and displaying his impressive actions. It also provided a glimpse into Giancarlo Esposito’s role (possibly as George “G.W.” Bridge), and introduced Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. A humorous reference was made to the visual difference between Ford and William Hurt, who previously portrayed the character.

Harrison Ford’s upcoming part has sparked intrigue, as the trailer’s closing moments seemingly confirm Ross transforming into the Red Hulk. In these scenes, he is depicted grabbing Captain America’s shield and forcefully slamming it to the ground. Previous speculation and unconfirmed whispers hinted at this possibility. Now, it appears these rumors hold some truth.

Red Hulk, explained

Thaddeus Ross made his debut in Marvel Comics‘ “Incredible Hulk” Issue 1, published in 1962. Throughout the comic series, he devoted most of his efforts to pursuing the elusive Hulk. After repeatedly facing defeat against his adversary and witnessing Bruce Banner (alias the Hulk) marry his beloved daughter Betty Ross, Ross’ intense hatred led him to transform into the very creature he detested. This profoundly illustrates the power of Ross’s hate.

If you’re new to the world of comics, you might not be aware of the existence of the Red Hulk. This character deviates from his green counterpart in several ways. For instance, they both exhibit immense strength, but the green Hulk is more powerful. In contrast, the Red Hulk becomes hotter instead of growing stronger when agitated. To delve deeper into the backgrounds of Red Hulk and Thaddeus Ross, I’d recommend checking out these four Marvel Comics: “Red Hulk: Anarchy,” “Incredible Hulk #600,” “Indestructible Hulk #1,” and “Red She-Hulk vs. Thunderbolts #1.” These titles will provide valuable context, helping you understand the dynamics between these characters in advance of reading “Captain America: Brave New World.”

World War Hulk

Writer:  Greg Pak

During “World War Hulk,” the Hulk re-emerged on Earth after being launched into space by the Illuminati in issue #91 of “Incredible Hulk” and further explored in “Planet Hulk.” Following the unsuccessful attempts of the heroes, General Ross enlisted the U.S. military to confront the Hulk. Despite being defeated once more, Ross’ actions left readers stunned with the dramatic turn of events in this memorable storyline.

Hulk (2008)

Writer: Jeph Loeb

Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross suffered his most significant loss during the “World War Hulk” event, leading him to a desperate decision: allowing The Leader and M.O.D.O.K to transform him into the Red Hulk. It takes great desperation to submit yourself to their manipulation; these characters hardly boast trustworthiness.

In this storyline, we witness the formidable abilities of a Hulk who has absorbed Ross’ military training. Initially, he knocks out the Watcher, eliminates Abomination with a firearm, and subdues Thor. As Jeph Loeb’s tenure progresses, it becomes apparent that Ross’ Hulk is more cunning and merciless than the classic Hulk, ultimately stripping Bruce Banner of his powers.

Avengers (2010)

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

After recognizing his errors, Ross makes an effort to make amends. During his journey, he encounters The Hood, or Parker Robbins, who is amassing the Infinity Gems. In a failed attempt to set things right, Ross engages in a fight with The Hood but suffers severely in the process. Eventually, this encounter leads Ross to aid the Avengers in defeating The Hood.

Just as many former villains have been given a chance to join the ranks of the heroic Avengers team, he has been granted this opportunity. Without him, the Avengers would have succumbed to the power of The Fear Itself, Norman Osborn’s Goblin Cult, and the Phoenix Five during their respective crises. Although his tenure with the team was brief, Ross can now pride himself as having been an Avenger.

Thunderbolts

Writers: Daniel Way, Charles Soule

If I had to suggest a title for those interested in delving deeper into Red Hulk’s storyline, I would highly recommend “Thunderbolts” written by Daniel Way. In this series, Ross assembles a team consisting of The Punisher, Elektra, Deadpool, The Leader, and Agent Venom to tackle issues that the Avengers cannot handle. The narrative is filled with intense action, dark humor, and offers an intriguing insight into Thaddeus Ross’s character and his determination to safeguard America. Additionally, it showcases some of Marvel’s most lethal characters at their finest.
