As a seasoned gamer of psychological thrillers who’s seen more serial killers than I can count, let me tell you that the new Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, is a game-changer! Streaming on Paramount+ and airing on Showtime, it’s got the perfect blend of dark humor, suspenseful plot twists, and a protagonist you can’t help but root for.
Today brings excitement for Dexter fans as the new prequel series, “Dexter: Original Sin,” makes its debut! You can now stream it on Paramount+, and if you prefer TV, catch it at 10 p.m. ET this Sunday, Dec. 15 on Showtime. With the prequel launching today, it’s hard not to think about the original show featuring Michael C. Hall. If you’re also reminiscing about it, here are 4 excellent shows that satisfy your craving for psychological thrillers available on streaming services.
You on Netflix
4 seasons streaming on Netflix, renewed for season 5
In contrast to Dexter who appears to have some form of moral guidance, Joe from “You” deviates significantly. If you’re seeking similar themes involving serial killers and their calculated methods for choosing victims, this Netflix series will cater to that. However, what makes Joe particularly chilling is his obsession with the women he pursues, constantly viewing himself as the wronged party. It’s a challenging show to endure, but it’s worthwhile if you appreciate this genre.
Squid Game on Netflix
The first season of this show is currently streaming on Netflix. The second season will premiere on December 26th, with a third and final season scheduled for release in 2025.
I absolutely adore Squid Game, one of my top Netflix series. It’s mind-blowingly captivating and manages to present a unique, heartbreaking concept in an engaging way. The show revolves around the Front Man, along with wealthy individuals who find themselves bored with their lives, wagering on human lives during these intense games. Yet, despite the chaos, the Front Man maintains a twisted sense of fairness as he oversees the games.
After each life-threatening match, the players have the option to decide if they wish to proceed to the next round or not. He believes this choice provides a fair playing field and freedom, but it serves as a justification for their actions. In both series, Dexter and Harry establish a code that allows them to eliminate individuals they deem unfit for society, subtly introducing a complex moral gray area.
Sweetpea on Starz
Season 1 streaming on Starz, renewed for season 2
In the Starz series “Sweetpea“, Rhiannon is portrayed as another serial killer who justifies her actions as righteous. After enduring bullying in high school and losing her father, she feels empowered to punish her tormentors and help others. However, as the season progresses, it seems she may have morphed into a bully herself. Despite a slow start in the first season, the gripping finale left me eager for more, and fortunately, the show has been renewed for another season!

Hannibal
Stream 3 seasons on Prime Video or AMC+
The character of Hannibal Lecter transcends the disturbing nature seen in Dexter, given his cannibalistic tendencies. Despite both shows belonging to the psychological thriller genre, “Hannibal” stands out due to its central villain, a psychiatrist and secret serial killer, attempting to manipulate Hugh Dancy’s character, Will Graham, into becoming a murderer as well. This series isn’t for the sensitive, yet it’s an engaging watch that I wholeheartedly endorse.
