4 HBO and Max shows that will probably be canceled in 2025 (and 1 show that might be)

As a long-time HBO subscriber who has witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved series, I must admit that I find myself feeling quite nostalgic as I read through this list of potential cancellations for 2025. It seems like just yesterday when I was eagerly awaiting the next episode of Sex and the City or The Sopranos, and now it appears that some of today’s most popular shows may soon be joining them in the annals of television history.

As a dedicated gamer, I can always rely on HBO and Max to serve up some of the most captivating and top-tier shows on television. Though we won’t be diving into the world of House of the Dragon when 2025 rolls around, there are fresh seasons of The White Lotus, The Last of Us, The Gilded Age, and Hacks set to premiere in the coming year – can’t wait!

Regrettably, it appears that some HBO and Max series may not continue past 2025 – these are the programs under discussion at present.

On a positive note, it seems that not many hit HBO and Max series are expected to be canceled in 2025. Shows like “The White Lotus” may even receive automatic renewals. As the creators continue to have stories to share, their series should effortlessly secure another season.

Let’s get this unfortunate list of HBO and Max in danger of getting canceled next year!

The Sex Lives of College Girls

In a more casual and straightforward manner: The third season of “The Sex Lives of College Girls” debuted on Max on November 21, 2024, yet there’s an uneasy feeling surrounding season 3.

Initially, it’s worth mentioning that one of the primary cast members, Reneé Rapp, departed from the show during season 3. I don’t necessarily mean to imply that the show is struggling because of her absence. There’s certainly plenty of narrative left to explore in this season. What I’m referring to is the waning enthusiasm among fans for the series. At this point, it might pick up as the season progresses.

Between seasons 2 and 3, there was a two-year break, during which fans’ initial excitement for the show seemed to dwindle. Given this lapse and the current situation with Warner Bros. Discovery and Max, it appears that the series “The Sex Lives of College Girls” might not get renewed for a fourth season if viewership remains low.

The Franchise

The series titled “The Franchise” hasn’t been receiving the expected level of appreciation on HBO to warrant a renewal, although it’s not entirely impossible considering HBO’s history of renewing shows with lower ratings. The show seems to cater to a niche audience due to its creative team (Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci, and Sam Mendes) and impressive cast, which suggests that it may benefit from a broader viewership.

It’s unfortunate that The Franchise might not gain enough traction due to the numerous high-profile shows HBO is planning for 2024 and beyond, as I genuinely appreciate its satirical aspect and consider it a good one. After all, I hold realistic expectations when it comes to TV shows.

As a gaming enthusiast, let me share my excitement about this series, The Franchise! If you’re new to it, this captivating tale follows the funny (and incredibly true-to-life!) adventures of the team behind a blockbuster superhero movie, revealing the chaos and camaraderie that unfolds as they work tirelessly to bring their vision to life on the big screen.

It’s good, and it’s funny, but is it popular enough? Is there enough story to justify a second season? Those are some of my questions. I think so, but i’m not confident. I would love to be wrong about The Franchise and its future on HBO.

The Righteous Gemstones

For me, The Righteous Gemstones is that HBO comedy that just always shows up in teasers and promos that makes me ask, “Oh, that show is still on?” And, I don’t mean that in a mean way! If this is your show, I’m happy for you, but I could not get into it after trying to watch it a few times.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that “The Righteous Gemstones,” a creation by the talented Danny McBride, is all about the Gemstone family – a colorful ensemble of televangelists striving to maintain their image as megachurch pastors. In this intriguing series, I have the pleasure of sharing the screen with Adam Devine, Edi Patterson, John Goodman, and other exceptional talents. Currently in its third season on HBO, we’re eagerly anticipating the upcoming fourth season scheduled for 2025.

It seems to me that The Righteous Gemstones may be nearing its conclusion. Despite the ratings not being a significant factor for HBO compared to other premium networks and streaming services, it appears that it’s not in a position where it would likely be renewed.

And Just Like That…

It’s quite possible that “And Just Like That…” could get a fourth season on Max, but I find myself pondering how much longer they plan to keep this series going. We’re yet to see the third season, which was renewed back in 2023 and is expected to debut in 2025.

It’s unlikely there will be a significant break between seasons, yet I always find myself anxious when fans must wait over a year or 1.5 years for new episodes, especially given this series covers multiple decades. The uncertainty lies in how many more seasons the cast and crew are willing to produce. Is Sarah Jessica Parker content with continuing as Carrie Bradshaw? Max appears accepting of And Just Like That… reaching its natural end, but aren’t we nearing the finale, wouldn’t you say?

Based on the ratings decline between seasons 1 and 2, as reported by Media Play News, if a similar drop occurs in season 3, it’s reasonable to anticipate that “And Just Like That…” might not be renewed for a fourth season.

The HBO show that might be canceled: Euphoria

I wasn’t entirely sure if Euphoria would be canceled before its third season premieres, but now I’m not hopeful at all that the show will continue beyond that point. It seems similar to The Watcher on Netflix, which was renewed for a second season, and since then, there’s been no sign of a third.

While there may be some setbacks, both HBO and Casey Bloys affirmatively confirm that “Euphoria” season 3 is moving forward, with plans for filming to commence early in 2025. It’s been disclosed that the new season will be available for viewers in 2026.

It seems unlikely that the stars can fit this new season into their busy schedules, given how demanding their current commitments are. If there are any additional setbacks, the situation could become even more complex than it already is. I’m not optimistic about seeing Euphoria season 3 until everything is wrapped up and ready to go. We’ll simply have to be patient and wait for developments.
