4 great shows like Modern Family

As a lifelong gaming enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can confidently say that finding a TV show that matches the charm of Modern Family is no less challenging than leveling up my character in an epic RPG! But after years of questing for the perfect series, I’ve finally assembled a party ready to tackle any sitcom adventure.

Hard to imagine that Modern Family, a show I hold dear among my favorite sitcoms, is now marking its 15th anniversary! Time sure does fly by. Recently, I revisited all 11 seasons and it’s left me with a wave of nostalgia.

If you find yourself yearning for a fresh series similar to “Modern Family,” which can be streamed on both Hulu and Peacock, then we’ve got just the right recommendations for you! Here are four fantastic sitcoms on streaming platforms that will surely fill the void left by Modern Family.

Full House

Stream all 8 seasons on Hulu, Disney+, or Max

If you’re familiar with “Full House”, then you understand why it ranks so highly. In my opinion, this ’80s sitcom shares many similarities with “Modern Family”. There are moments of drama, life lessons, and a mix of antics from both the grown-ups and kids. Does that sound familiar? Essentially, that’s what “Modern Family” is all about!

One aspect I adore about Full House is its unique balance between portraying the lives of both adults and children. This dual focus was a rarity when it first aired, making it exceptionally engaging. In fact, this approach is reminiscent of the style used in Modern Family, which also makes it relatable to many viewers.

If you enjoy the atmosphere of large group dynamics, this sitcom delivers just that. Regardless of whether you’ve watched it before, make sure to include Full House in your watchlist! Personally, I’m a fan of Full House, but if you crave more of the same universe, there’s a follow-up series called Fuller House. All 5 seasons are available to stream on Netflix as well.

Schitt’s Creek

Stream all 6 seasons on Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+

In the TV show “Schitt’s Creek,” the Rose family initially comes off as snobbish, but over time they learn to embrace empathy and care deeply for one another. The story unfolds as the Rouses – Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis – are forced to live in a run-down town that owns their only asset, a motel, after losing their wealth. David’s flair for the dramatic and his expressive facial expressions will undoubtedly have you chuckling, reminding me of Cam’s character.

This series beautifully portrays a family’s journey towards unity, adapting to their circumstances, and fostering bonds within the town they find themselves in. Essentially, it’s all about family dynamics, just like ‘Modern Family’. Remarkably similar is the growth of Jay, Claire, Mitchell, and even Johnny and Moira, as they learn to prioritize each other’s needs. Rest assured, there are plenty of amusing and humorous scenes throughout, making it an enjoyable watch.

Catastrophe

Stream all 4 seasons on Prime Video

Some of you may not have heard of this show, but it has Sharon Hogan and Rob Delaney. So I knew when it first came out in 2015 that I had to watch it. The actress is absolutely hilarious and I love her delivery. Now this one is different than Modern Family, but I think it will still give you the same feel with the family element. In Catastrophe, Sharon Morris (Hogan) who lives in London and Rob Norris (Delaney) who is visiting the city meet and sleep together for almost a week. When Rob goes back to Boston, Sharon finds out she’s pregnant.

She informs Rob about something, leading him to relocate to London. This is when they truly begin to understand each other and make plans for raising their child jointly. They embark on this journey and eventually decide to wed. However, it’s not all smooth sailing. This blend of comedy and drama offers a realistic portrayal of how one copes with the unforeseen twists life presents, particularly in matters concerning family. And I believe that at times, Modern Family touched upon similar themes as well.

This Is Us

Stream all 6 seasons on Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix

Absolutely! Compared to Modern Family, This Is Us certainly packs a more emotional punch. In fact, you might find yourself shedding tears during almost every episode. The central theme revolves around the lives and struggles of both the adult characters and their children. Randall is one of the kids in this series; he was adopted by Jack and Rebecca Pearson. I admire how the show tackles a unique aspect of their family dynamic – even though the Pearsons deeply care for Randall, they acknowledge that, as white parents, they may not fully understand the specific challenges of raising a black son.

I feel like Lily’s adoption and perhaps a storyline of her asking more questions about her birth parents or where she comes from could have been a really strong plot line for her, as well as Mitchell and Cam. I think this was a bit of a missed opportunity. So if you feel the same, then This Is Us is going to give you that. Plus, just like the other shows on this list, it’s all about the importance of family at the end of the day. And no matter how crazy and hectic life for the Dunphys, Pritchetts, and Tuckers could get, family was no. 1. And that’s what This Is Us represents as well.
