4 good shows like The Empress

As a history enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the lives and times of royal families across Europe, I can wholeheartedly say that The Empress is a must-watch for any fan of historical dramas! Having binge-watched every episode of season 2 within days of its release, I am thrilled to see it climbing up Netflix’s Top 10 in the United States and becoming the No. 1 show in various countries.

The series ‘The Empress,’ starring Devrim Lingnau, is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows! This German original follows Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, portrayed by Lingau, who ascends to the position of Empress of Austria. However, she encounters opposition in her new environment as she navigates finding her footing.

On September 29, 2022, the initial season of the show debuted on Netflix, indicating that viewers had been eagerly anticipating the next installment for quite some time!

The second season of “The Empress” debuted on Netflix on November 22nd, and it’s quickly climbing the ranks in the U.S. Netflix Top 10 charts. In various countries, season 2 of “The Empress” is currently the most-watched show on Netflix.

After wrapping up their binge on The Empress, fans might be looking for a fresh series to dive into next. If that’s the case for you, don’t worry – we have plenty of suggestions to keep you entertained!

Here are four excellent series that I recommend you check out, especially if you enjoyed “The Empress.” We’ll begin with a show that fans of “The Empress” should not miss – “Bridgerton!” Enjoy your viewing time!

Bridgerton

Where to watch: Netflix

If you’re captivated by the intrigue of “The Empress,” but crave a more enchanting, romantically-charged, and whimsical experience, then “Bridgerton” is the show for you! While it maintains elements of historical drama, it leans more towards an entertaining exploration of love within the Bridgerton family, as depicted in Julia Quinn’s beloved novel series.

Hey there fellow gaming enthusiasts! As a binge-watcher, let me tell ya, I’ve been hooked on Bridgerton ever since it dropped on Netflix on Christmas 2020. This Shonda Rhimes and Chris Van Dusen production quickly became one of the most talked-about shows on the streaming platform. The second season arrived in the spring of 2022, with the third season gracing our screens in the spring of 2024. And guess what? They’re already working on Bridgerton season 4! So if you’re looking for a new series that keeps on giving, this is the one to tune into!

The television series Bridgerton boasts an outstanding ensemble featuring talents such as Jonathan Bailey, Rege Jean-Page, Phoebe Dynevor, Simone Ashley, Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton, Golda Rosheuvel, and many others!

If you’re a fan of “Bridgerton,” I can’t help but suggest “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” for you. This series serves as a prequel to the original show.

The Great

Where to watch: Hulu

Instead of “The Great” being less enjoyable and less dramatic compared to “The Empress”, consider this: “The Great” offers a more entertaining and captivating experience than “The Empress”, making it an excellent choice for your current viewing pleasure! This series is a unique blend of humor and drama, presenting the tale of Catherine the Great, portrayed by Elle Fanning, during her marriage with Emperor Peter III, played by Nicholas Hoult.

The spectacular series debuted on Hulu during the spring of 2020. It aired for three seasons on the streaming platform before wrapping up, in my view, too soon. Frankly, I believe this show doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. It’s hysterically funny, surprisingly shocking, and simply outstanding! Believe me, I’m not just praising it.

If you’re a fan of “The Empress, The Great,” then be sure to check out the other shows on this list as “The Great” is the one I recommend for you!

Outlander

4 good shows like The Empress

Where to watch: Starz and Netflix

A frequently compared TV show to Bridgerton, The Great, and The Empress is none other than Outlander! This captivating historical romance series is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s book series with the same title. It centers around Claire Randall, a 1930s nurse, who mysteriously finds herself transported back in time to 1700s Scotland. Here she encounters and falls for Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan, and their love tale unfolds across the series.

The television series “Outlander” initially aired on Starz in August 2014, and it’s currently in the midst of its seventh season. We recently saw the beginning of the second part of this season on November 22nd.

The show “Outlander” has been officially renewed for both its eighth season and its final season. So, if you’ve been considering hopping aboard the “Outlander” train, now would be the perfect moment!

The Diplomat

4 good shows like The Empress

Where to watch: Netflix

Among these shows, there’s one that stands out as being somewhat similar to another, although I can’t precisely pinpoint why. The show titled “The Diplomat” seems reminiscent of “The Empress“, yet it’s significantly more comical and theatrical. Its narrative structure deliberately builds tension, making it quite intense. Conversely, “The Empress ” doesn’t follow this pattern, but it certainly delivers on the dramatic front!

“The Diplomat” sees Keri Russell portray Kate Wyler, the appointed Ambassador to the UK, thrust into her role amidst a significant global predicament. Much like The Empress, she finds herself unsure of whom to confide in. Amidst this intrigue, she embarks on an investigation to unmask the culprit behind the explosion of a British aircraft carrier and restore order.

Currently, there are two seasons of “The Diplomat” available on Netflix. The second season made its debut on Netflix on October 31st. In fact, the show was renewed for a third season before the premiere of season 3.
