Looking for a show the whole family can enjoy on Netflix? Here are four great options. We’ve all experienced that moment – visiting family and wanting to find a new TV show everyone will like after dinner.
I’ve definitely been there. You see a movie or show with a high Rotten Tomatoes score and get your hopes up, but within minutes, it’s a disaster. Suddenly everyone’s glued to their phones during an unnecessary sex scene, or conveniently needs to do chores when something violent happens, or you just hear groans about how weird the creative choices are. It’s so frustrating when something promising falls apart so quickly!
Although shows with romance, violence, or unusual formats can be great, they aren’t always ideal for family viewing on a Saturday night when everyone is trying to unwind. If you want a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that won’t offend anyone, these four Netflix series are excellent choices.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015-2020)

Most comedies don’t appeal to all ages, but shows like The Office, 30 Rock, and Friends have achieved that rare broad appeal – and their place among the greatest comedies of all time proves it. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt deserves to be mentioned in the same conversation.
Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the show centers on Kimmy Schmidt, played by Ellie Kemper. Kimmy was kidnapped as a teenager and held captive in an underground bunker for 15 years by a cult leader who convinced her and others that a nuclear disaster had wiped out the world, leaving them as the only survivors.
Once Kimmy is rescued, she moves to New York City eager to embrace all the experiences she missed out on during her years in captivity. The show is delightful, heartwarming, and consistently hilarious. It prioritizes laughs over heavy drama, making it perfect lighthearted entertainment, especially when watching with family.
Ripley (2024)

A common mistake when picking a show to watch with parents is choosing something overly complicated or modern. Some shows demand so much focus that it’s hard to enjoy them, especially when you haven’t spent quality time with family in a while.
Thrillers, mysteries, and psychological dramas remain popular because they’re so engaging. The new miniseries, Ripley, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1995 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, perfectly balances a compelling story with genuine suspense, offering a modern take on the classic noir genre.
Andrew Scott plays Tom Ripley, a charming con artist in 1960s New York. He’s paid by a rich man to go to Italy and convince his son, Dickie Greenleaf (played by Johnny Flynn), to come back home. The series is a suspenseful and carefully crafted story of Ripley’s elaborate schemes and crimes that will captivate viewers of all ages.
The Crown (2016-2023)

Historical dramas used to be a guaranteed, family-friendly option for TV viewing. But recently, they’ve become much more explicit. While shows like Bridgerton, The Great, and The Empress are really good, they’re not always something I’d want to watch with my mom.
Unlike some other historical shows, The Crown focuses on the grandeur and tradition of the royal family without dwelling on explicit sexual content. Despite this, it still delivers incredibly touching love stories, making it a standout drama on television.
With six seasons covering much of Queen Elizabeth II’s life, The Crown offers something for all viewers. Whether you’re interested in the details of governing and political maneuvering, complicated family dynamics, or a fresh look at history, you’ll find it in this series.
Kingdom (2019-2021)
I know I usually advise against watching really graphic shows with your parents, but zombie horror is a bit of an exception. There’s something almost comical about it, which makes the violence easier to handle, especially when the people being eaten are warriors – they knew the risks when they signed up!
If your parents enjoy horror, they’ll likely be captivated by Kingdom, a historical series that blends elements of Game of Thrones, Shōgun, and World War Z. It’s full of suspense, intrigue, bravery, and just enough scares. The zombies, dressed in traditional Korean attire, are more fascinating than frightening.
This Netflix series takes place in 17th-century Joseon, which is now known as Korea. The story follows a power struggle between the crown prince and his scheming stepmother, complicated by a sudden zombie outbreak that puts the entire country at risk. It’s visually stunning, brilliantly written, and thoroughly entertaining.
