As a lifelong fan of Australian radio, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions reading about the career moves of Denis O’Kane and Jimmy Bartel. On one hand, it’s bittersweet to see a legend like Denis stepping back from full-time work, as his voice has been a constant companion in my car for decades. But on the other, I’m thrilled that he’ll still be around, even if just casually, keeping that 3AW culture alive.
Melbourne radio legend Denis O’Kane has announced he’s ready to make a major career move.
After many years of being a dedicated figure at highly-rated station 3AW, the 77-year-old is announcing his retirement from full-time employment.
His current gig as reporter and newsreader at the station is set to end in December.
However, Denis will not be hanging up the head phones just yet.
Over the weekend, I was thrilled to learn from The Herald Sun that this media legend has secured a role working casually with the station until 2025! As an ardent fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for what’s to come!
Denis, who kicked off his broadcasting journey at the tender age of 18, has been connected with 3AW for quite some time now, spending the past two decades there in his most recent tenure.

‘This is my third time here,’ the fan favourite told the publication.
I began my journey here in 1981, and a large portion of my professional life has been spent right here at 3AW. Over the past 27 years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of this esteemed station.
As you grow older, you might find yourself thinking, “There’s so much more I’d like to explore,” and maintaining some connection with the radio station seems like a wonderful way to do that.
He added: ‘3AW has been very special to me, it has been like a second home. We have a great culture here and it always has been the case since my involvement with the station…[radio] gets in your blood’.
Following the commencement of his radio career in Victoria, he subsequently took up positions in Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne’s 3XY. (Or) Moving forward from his initial radio career in Victoria, he landed roles in Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne’s 3XY. (Or) He progressed in his radio career, starting in Victoria, then moving to Adelaide, Sydney, and eventually to Melbourne’s 3XY.
Beyond my passion for radio, I’ve had the privilege to grace not just one, but several stations – 2GB, 3AK, and 2Day FM. Beyond my on-air presence, I’ve held significant roles behind the scenes too. I’ve served as a station manager at 3AW and taken up the mantle of news director at Fox FM.
Denis has worked closely with 3AW stars such as Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft and Tom Elliott.
It comes after 3AW recently announced another change to its on air line up.

AFL great Jimmy Bartel is set to host the station’s Wide World of Sports from next year.
As a seasoned lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be lending my voice to the airwaves for Thursday Night Football and Friday Night Football, right here in Melbourne. Previously, I shone on the field as a Geelong star, but now, I’m excited to bring my passion and insights to you, our listeners!
However, in an unexpected recent interview, the football icon disclosed his preferred sport, and AFL enthusiasts might be taken aback by his initial pick.
‘I’m a cricket tragic,’ Jimmy told 3AW breakfast last month.
In their conversation, the 2007 Brownlow Medal winner kept expressing affectionate admiration for the “noble sport” or simply referred to it as “the elegant game.
‘I’m an absolute nut for (cricket).
“I prefer not to watch test matches involving Australia. Instead, I find myself deeply engrossed in the test series between New Zealand and India. Frankly, I feel that I’ve had enough of the game.
In a recent conversation, I was left speechless yet again by Jimmy’s bold claim – he’d rethink his entire sports career and rule out Australian Rules Football from the get-go!
‘If I had my time again I think it would be golf (as a career).
‘This is the game that everyone desires to engage in, as it seems relatively non-strenuous and offers substantial rewards. If we all become proficient at playing golf, we would all find ourselves quite content.’
As a seasoned veteran with over 300 games under my belt as a player for the Geelong Football Club from 2002 to 2016, I’ve recently stepped into a fresh challenge – one that finds me leveraging my passion and experience in the realm of Australian Rules Football. This new role comes on the heels of my successful tenure hosting the Sunday AFL show on 3AW in the year 2023.
He told listeners last month that he set to start his new gig in February.
