Good news for Western fans: Kevin Costner’s classic film, Dances With Wolves, is now available to stream for free! Costner has a clear passion for the genre, as demonstrated by his role in the popular series Yellowstone and his recent self-funded epic, Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1. While details about the next chapter of Horizon are still unknown, you can revisit one of Costner’s most beloved films without spending a dime.
You can now watch Dances With Wolves for free on Pluto TV. It joined the platform on February 1st, along with other classic westerns like High Noon, Hang ‘Em High, and the 2010 version of True Grit. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Blake, who also co-wrote the movie’s script with Kevin Costner, who also directed it.
Released in 1990, the film stars Kevin Costner as Lieutenant Dunbar, a soldier stationed at a distant outpost during the American Civil War. Through his encounters with a group of Lakota Native Americans, Dunbar’s perspective on their land and the conflict dramatically shifts. Here’s the official description of the movie:
During the Civil War, a soldier forms a connection with a Lakota tribe. He’s drawn to their uncomplicated way of life and decides to abandon his old life to live among them, earning the name Dances With Wolves. He’s accepted into the tribe and eventually falls in love with a white woman who grew up as one of them. However, their peaceful existence is shattered when U.S. soldiers arrive, intent on taking their land, leading to a tragic outcome.
‘Dances With Wolves’ Is a Western Classic
Though it wasn’t made during the peak of classic Westerns starring actors like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, Dances With Wolves is now considered a classic of the genre. When it was released in 1990, critics loved it, and it won seven Academy Awards.
Dances With Wolves is highly rated by both critics and audiences, earning an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. These scores come from a combination of older, republished reviews and newer ones. One enthusiastic Rotten Tomatoes user called it a “masterpiece that powerfully evokes emotion, showcases genuine friendship, and explores the human need for belonging.”
Is ‘Dances With Wolves’ Actually Controversial?

Orion Pictures
It’s impossible to talk about Dances With Wolves today without acknowledging the criticisms it’s received in recent years. When it first came out, the film was widely enjoyed as a classic western. But with the rise of new ways of analyzing stories, it’s become a key example of the ‘white savior trope’ – and it’s easy to understand why. While the film’s portrayal of race and culture can be problematic, that doesn’t necessarily mean we should stop watching it, as long as the filmmakers didn’t intend to promote harmful views. It’s important to recognize the issues, but Dances With Wolves remains a powerful and well-intentioned film.
