36 Years Later, Dragon Ball Reveals an Alternative Look for Rare ‘Realism-Seeping’ Goku

After being sketched 36 years ago, a previously unseen alternate version of a rare piece of artwork has been released by the creators.

A new piece of artwork released on the official Dragon Ball website shows Goku in a surprisingly different look. He’s traded in his usual orange uniform for a green Capsule Corp jacket, complete with a baseball cap and goggles. He’s still carrying his Power Pole and riding his green, two-legged dragon.

This artwork is one of two illustrations created by the late Akira Toriyama for the cover of the first volume of his artbook, Akira Toriyama: The World. While the red version was selected for the cover, this green version wasn’t used and is being revealed now.

Dragon Ball Reveals Goku’s Rare Alternate Look Artwork

The official website previously shared that the artwork’s detailed textures and shading gave it a realistic look. Because the green version of this artwork hadn’t been released before, this reveal is particularly exciting for fans who have followed the series for a long time.

Akira Toriyama: The World is a collection of five artbooks showcasing the work of the famous manga artist Akira Toriyama. Published in Japan between 1990 and 1995 by Shueisha and Bird Studio, the series began with a volume released on January 15, 1990. This first book, spanning 100 pages, looks back at Toriyama’s accomplishments throughout the 1980s.

I’m so excited about this! It’s packed with amazing full-color illustrations from all my favorite Akira Toriyama works – you’ve got stuff from Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, and even Dragon Quest! Plus, it includes really cool early sketches of characters like Zarbon, and a short, fun picture story called Wolf. It’s a real treat for any fan!

A new piece of artwork has been released, and it will be available for 24 hours. Like the recent Goku artwork, this release is one of several being revealed as part of this ongoing feature.

Although the official website details the series’ past, there hasn’t been any announcement about whether the Dragon Ball Super manga will continue, following Akira Toriyama’s death.

Good news for anime fans! A remastered version of Dragon Ball Super called Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is coming in Fall 2026. This new series will rebuild the original story from the manga, starting with the early arcs.

A new anime based on the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner” story arc from the manga has been announced. It’s officially called Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol and is currently being made.
