35 Years Later, This Cult Classic Sci-Fi Horror “Throwback” Is Slithering to Streaming Success

A classic monster movie from 1990, which launched a long-running science fiction film series, is currently popular on streaming platforms. The film features a team taking on a particularly challenging and squirming creature, and remains a beloved cult hit.

Ron Underwood directed Tremors, also co-writing the script with producers Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson. The film features Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire, and the late Fred Ward. Currently, Tremors is gaining popularity on streaming platforms, appearing alongside films like No Time to Die, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Wicked, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the documentary John Candy: I Like Me, and Mark Wahlberg’s Play Dirty. The official synopsis for Tremors is available below.

Val McKee and Earl Bassett, two repairmen stuck in a rut in the quiet desert town of Perfection, Nevada, are ready for a change. Just as they plan to leave, they stumble upon a string of strange deaths and meet a seismologist investigating unusual activity underground. Joining forces with a quirky couple, the group must fight to survive against enormous, flesh-eating worm-like creatures.

Will Kevin Bacon Return in a ‘Tremors’ Legacy Sequel?

Universal Pictures

You know, Tremors didn’t do great when it first came out, but it’s become a total fan favorite over the years! It’s amazing how much people love it now – both critics and regular moviegoers agree it’s a really fun ride. In fact, it has an 89% rating from critics and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes! They say it’s a loving nod to those classic monster movies from the 50s, and it perfectly blends scares with a lot of laughs. It really hits all the right notes!

The original film Tremors led to a series of sequels, direct-to-video releases, and a TV show. The latest installment, Tremors: Shrieker Island (released in 2020), featured Michael Gross reprising his role as Burt Gummer, the resourceful survivalist and conspiracy theorist.

Fans are still hoping to see Kevin Bacon reprise his role as the unlikely hero, Val McKee, in a new Tremors movie. With the current trend of revisiting classic franchises, a follow-up starring Bacon seems likely, and was actually pitched in 2018. Unfortunately, several channels, including Syfy, decided not to move forward with it. However, there’s renewed hope now that Stampede Entertainment – the company that made the original 1990 film – has officially secured the rights to the script, as confirmed in April.

The original creators of the film – director Ron Underwood, producer Nancy Roberts, and writers Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson – announced they plan to make a new sequel, with Kevin Bacon returning to lead the project.

We’re not looking at ideas from outside sources right now. We’re talking about making another Tremors sequel, and maybe a couple of wilder concepts with the graboids in different locations. Whatever we present to Hollywood, it won’t be a simple remake of the original with new actors, and it won’t be the script we initially wrote for Tremors 5. We’re thinking about bringing Kevin Bacon back as Val, but we can’t guarantee it!
