As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been digging into the sales figures for Douyin and it turns out that the Champions 2025 bundle for Valorant has raked in an astounding $35M in mere five days. This massive revenue surge underscores the increasing might of China’s gaming market.
In a span of merely five days, sales from the VCT Champions bundles on the Chinese social media platform Douyin amounted to more than $35 million, which were handled by Riot Games.
On Douyin, which is China’s equivalent to TikTok, there are shopping features reminiscent of TikTok Shop. The visibility of sales quantities provides an insightful gauge into the popularity of VALORANT skins and cosmetics within the Chinese market, demonstrating strong demand.
Record-Breaking Sales on Douyin
The VCT Champions package, priced at 426 RMB ($60), has seen an impressive sales figure. So far, more than half a million (593,000) of these packages have been bought through Douyin alone, equating to a massive $35.6 million in revenue. This bundle was made available starting September 4.
In Chinese internet cafes during August, VALORANT ranked second in popularity, with League of Legends being the most played game. Following these two, the next most frequented games were Delta Force, Counter-Strike 2, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Millions in revenue for Partnered Teams
Riot Games distributes half of the earnings from the Champions Bundle to Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) teams. This means that, thanks to a popular Chinese social media platform, around $18 million is distributed among all 44 partnered VCT teams. It’s worth noting that this amount may grow significantly due to China’s thriving Valorant community.
In reference to the context, the VALORANT Champions package in 2023 amassed a grand total of approximately $40 million, with $20 million allocated to the participating teams.
Overwhelmingly Positive Fan Reactions
On the Chinese platform, the reaction to the bundle has been predominantly favorable, garnering 8,422 comments, out of which 8,218 were positive, translating to a staggering 97.5% approval rating.
A Douyin user expressed their delight by saying, “The sound of firing guns and the butterfly knife animations are fantastic, so smooth! This is the finest purchase I’ve made yet, truly fitting for the 25th Championship theme – it surpassed all my expectations.
A different Douyin user expressed, “I got this for my boyfriend, hoping it brings him daily joy. I don’t always get these things, but he enjoys them, and that’s all that matters. This particular item feels like a once-in-a-while sentimental purchase.
The long road to China’s approval
1) For years, game publishers have aspired to break into the lucrative Chinese market. However, this involves getting government clearance and collaborating with a local partner to run operations. Interestingly, Riot Games has joined forces with Tencent for both VALORANT and League of Legends in China.
From Delayed Launch to World Champions
In a swift move, Riot Games launched VALORANT officially in China on July 12, 2023, marking three years since its initial release. This strategic decision by Riot Games reflects their eagerness to tap into the Chinese market following the debut of their tactical FPS game.
To celebrate VALORANT’s debut in China, two Chinese squads, Attacking Soul Esports and EDward Gaming, were extended invitations for the Tokyo Masters 2023 tournament. This event marked the global unveiling of Zheng “ZmjjKK” Yongkang, popularly known as Kangkang, from EDG’s roster.
2024 kicked off with an exciting development for me as a gamer – China got its own VCT League! Fast-forward six months, and EDWard Gaming from China, my fellow gamers, were the world champions at VCT Champions 2024 in South Korea. Their success hasn’t slowed down. They placed third at Masters Bangkok in 2025, and their prowess on the battlefield has garnered a dedicated fanbase back home.
Looking Ahead to VCT Champions 2025
In the 2025 VCT Champions tournament, just like the previous year, it will be the turn of four Chinese teams to compete: Bilibili Gaming, Dragon Ranger Gaming, EDWard Gaming, and XLG Esports.
The global finals commence on September 12 and continue until October 5, providing ample opportunity for bundled product offers. Given the early success of Douyin sales, the VCT Champions 2025 might break previous records, as the Chinese audience enthusiastically supports their four local teams.
