The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand will include esports competitions starting this December. Four esports titles, for both men and women, will be featured. This marks the fourth time in a row that the SEA Games will showcase esports, having first included them in 2019. Three of the four games will be played on mobile devices.

The esports competition will begin on December 13th, 2025, and last approximately one week, culminating in a championship for the winning teams. Because this is a national competition, teams will be formed by countries, not individual organizations. The main event will start a few days earlier, on December 9th.

Four esports titles to rock the audience, an action-packed week is coming

Mobile Legends and Arena of Valor will include both men’s and women’s competitions. The other two games will only have men’s events. Teams playing Free Fire and EA SPORTS FC Online, however, can be a mix of male and female players.

The way titles are awarded will follow a similar qualification process to the one used in the competitions themselves. Here’s a quick overview of the events:

Arena of Valor

Despite its popularity in the country, the Arena of Valor tournaments will only have four players competing in both the men’s and women’s events. The women’s tournament starts on December 15th and runs through the 16th, while the men’s tournament will be held on the 17th and 18th. Currently, no other details about the tournaments are available.

Free Fire

The competition will feature 12 teams and begin with a ‘point rush’ phase on December 17, 2025. Each day, teams will earn bonus points based on how well they perform. The following day will host the Grand Final, where all 12 teams will compete.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Ten teams will compete in the men’s event, split into two groups of five. All initial matches will be best-of-two. The top three teams from each group will move on to a single-elimination bracket. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and bronze medal game will be best-of-five, while the championship match will be best-of-seven.

Okay, so for the women’s side of the tournament, they’re splitting us into two groups. One group will have five teams, and the other will have four. Every match in the beginning will be a best-of-two – meaning we play two games and whoever wins the most moves on. The top three teams from each group will make it to the knockout stage, so it’s pretty important to do well in those early matches!

The tournament will move into a single-elimination bracket, meaning one loss eliminates a team. The semifinal and bronze medal matches will be best-of-five, while the final match to determine the gold medal winner will be best-of-seven.

EA SPORTS FC Online

Okay, so the details about this competition are pretty scarce right now. What we do know is that six teams are going to be competing, and it’s happening December 13th and 14th. It’s going to be a 1v1 showdown, and it’s all happening on PC. Not a ton to go on, but I’m excited to see what it’s all about!

Esports has been growing steadily alongside traditional sports, and its inclusion as a medal event has been well-deserved. With each competition, esports continues to prove its value, and the upcoming event is sure to draw large crowds and be another big success.

The next edition of this sports event is scheduled for Malaysia in 2027. We’re hoping the esports portion will be even larger and more successful, with more teams participating.
