33 Years Later, Val Kilmer’s Most Legendary Western Gets Resurrected on Streaming

Over thirty years after it first hit theaters, this classic film is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. It’s climbing the streaming charts, proving its enduring legacy as one of the greatest Westerns of all time.

The Western film Tombstone is currently a hit on AMC+, climbing to the No. 9 spot on the platform’s overall Top 10 list, according to FlixPatrol. Released in 1993 and directed by George P. Cosmatos with a screenplay by Kevin Jarre, the movie earned $73 million in theaters (equivalent to about $167 million today). While critics gave it a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences love it even more, with a 93% score, and many consider it one of the greatest Westerns ever made.

Val Kilmer Shines as Doc Holliday in Tombstone

I’ve always been a Val Kilmer fan, and I think his portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone is truly iconic. He’s done a few other Westerns – he was Billy the Kid back in ’89 and even Wyatt Earp in a 2012 film – but Tombstone is the one everyone remembers. Honestly, I think it’s his best performance, and a lot of other fans feel the same way.

The film Tombstone features a strong cast led by Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp, alongside Sam Elliott as Virgil Earp and Bill Paxton as Morgan Earp. Supporting actors include Powers Boothe as Curly Bill, Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo, Charlton Heston as Henry Hooker, and Jon Tenney as Sheriff Johnny Behan. The ensemble also features Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Jason Priestley, Michael Rooker, Billy Bob Thornton, Frank Stallone, Billy Zane, and even Wyatt Earp III.

Val Kilmer Should’ve Been Nominated for an Oscar

Despite a talented cast, his performance stood out. It’s surprising he wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards. He did receive recognition at the MTV Movie Awards, being nominated for both Best Male Performer and Most Desirable Male. Fans continue to love the performances of Kilmer and the entire cast, frequently rewatching Tombstone, which is considered a classic Western film.

In his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, Val Kilmer shared his deep affection for Kurt Russell, describing him as a brother. He praised their time working together and confidently predicted Russell would be the first recipient of a hypothetical lifetime achievement award recognizing a consistently kind and exceptional person. Kilmer jokingly offered to ‘eat his Doc Holliday hat’ if someone else were to receive the honor. Both the film they worked on and Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday have gained a dedicated fan base.
