33 Years Later, The Sandlot Cast Officially Reunites In New TV Show

A new game is underway for The Sandlot cast 33 years after the original movie.

Since its release in 1993, The Sandlot has become a much-loved movie, known for its story of growing up and its memorable lines. After Disney bought 20th Century Fox and launched Disney+, people began speculating about a sequel series. However, as of 2023, reports indicate that the project is no longer in development.

Patrick Renna, known for his role as Ham Porter in the classic film The Sandlot, recently told The Movie Nerds that the original cast is coming back together for a new show called Little League Dads. He explained that this won’t be a continuation of the 1993 movie – they won’t be playing their old characters – but will instead portray the fathers in the series. Renna also shared that he only heard rumors about a possible Disney+ sequel and never had any discussions with Disney about it. You can find more details about what he said below.

I’m not sure about a full sequel, but I did hear some talk about it. I never actually spoke with anyone from Disney, it was all just rumors. What I am doing is bringing the cast of The Sandlot back together for a new project! At the end of June, I’m filming a series of short videos called Little League Dads for my YouTube channel. We’ll all play dads, and it’ll be a fun reunion. It won’t be a direct Sandlot sequel, but it’s a great way to get everyone back together. As for a real sequel… we’ll see what happens, anything is possible.

I’m really excited about what Renna and his company, Hambino Productions, are cooking up! Apparently, Little League Dads is just one of several projects they’ve got in the works, and it’s cool to hear they’ve reunited the cast of The Sandlot. What’s even more promising is the creative team behind it – they’ve brought in some seriously talented people like Sebastian Jones, who wrote for Friends, Dan Kopelman from Malcolm in the Middle, and Victor Nelli, who directed Superstore. It sounds like a really solid group! And on top of all that, Renna’s still taking on other gigs, like directing a Hershey’s commercial, which is awesome.

Sebastian Jones and Dan Kopelman are writing a project called Little League Dads. Sebastian has a strong writing background from his work on Friends, and Dan is a highly respected writer. Victor Nelli is directing, so we’ve assembled a really talented team. My producing partner, Kyle Howard, and I at Hambino Media are working on this and other exciting projects. Aside from producing, I’m still acting, like I am with the Hershey’s campaign – it’s a fun way to collaborate with a great brand. I even got to include my son in the Hershey’s commercial; he appeared in a couple of the scenes, which was a blast. I asked him if he wanted to spend a day eating s’mores and Hershey’s chocolate and getting paid for it, and he was immediately on board! He didn’t mind skipping school for the day, and of course, we had a teacher on set to ensure he didn’t fall behind.

While Renna hasn’t said exactly which stars from The Sandlot will appear in Little League Dads, he hinted it will be a significant reunion with “all” of them. However, it’s worth noting that Mike Vitar and Tom Guiry, who played Benny Rodriguez and Scotty Smalls, have both had legal issues, and Vitar stopped acting after 1997.

Chauncey Leopardi and Brandon Quintin, the actors who played Squints and The Heater in the 1993 film, are potentially taking on the roles of fathers in a new YouTube series.

Some of the adult actors from The Sandlot, like Denis Leary and Karen Allen, have continued working in film and television – Leary appeared in Going Dutch, and Allen in the recent Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Sadly, James Earl Jones, who played Mr. Mertle, passed away in 2024. However, he had a long and successful career after The Sandlot, notably reprising his role as the voice of Darth Vader in several Star Wars projects.

Patrick Renna is best known for his iconic line, “You’re killing me, Smalls!,” from the movie The Sandlot. He’s also appeared in many popular TV shows like Boy Meets World, ER, Boston Legal, CSI, and Bones, as well as the recent film You Gotta Believe and the series GLOW.
