The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers launched a hugely popular franchise that became a global hit. Leading a double life as a superhero is tough, especially when you’re a teenager. The cast of MMPR had many rules to follow as Power Rangers, but one of them still doesn’t make any sense and could have caused them to lose their powers prematurely.

Leaders always make sure their teams follow the rules, but protecting the Rangers’ secret identities is surprisingly weak. Throughout the original series, characters frequently figured out who the Rangers were, and sometimes this happened because the Rangers weren’t careful enough. While their identities weren’t always revealed on screen, the Rangers’ own carelessness often contributed to these close calls.

There were times when villains like Bulk and Skull discovered the Rangers’ secret identities, but those memories were later removed. Interestingly, when fellow teens Rocky, Aisha, and Adam learned the truth, the Rangers weren’t punished – they were actually given the power to become Rangers themselves. This created an inconsistent rule: sometimes revealing the secret identities had no consequences, and even allowed others to join the team, yet Zordon never seemed to address it.

These instances, though small, clearly demonstrate that Zordon’s third rule wasn’t a strict law, but more of a suggestion. It was a lot to expect these young heroes to keep their powers secret, and ultimately, the story prioritized dramatic moments over strictly following that rule. While the first two rules stayed important, the third one was often overlooked when it served the larger narrative.

Future Seasons of Power Rangers Completely Retcon This Rule

The third rule—keeping superhero identities secret—was clearly flawed, as Zordon didn’t even know when it was broken. While it’s always best to protect a secret identity, mistakes are bound to happen. It would have been more compelling if a ranger had intentionally revealed themselves before the rule was dropped, as that might have given it some weight before everyone forgot about it.

As a huge Power Rangers fan, the finale of In Space always gets me! Seeing the Rangers reveal who they were to all of Angel Grove was such a powerful moment, especially knowing what Zordon did next to save the galaxy. It really wouldn’t have happened if Zordon had stuck to his usual rules! And it was great because it reminded us that these heroes were just regular people working together, too.

From that point on, there was an understanding that a Power Ranger’s identity should remain secret, but it wasn’t something anyone would get in trouble for. We also wanted Rangers to be seen more as jobs, which meant several people would naturally know who they were. This approach actually led to some really strong seasons, like Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue and Power Rangers SPD. In those seasons, the powers felt more grounded in reality, and the Zords were vehicles instead of the traditional animal forms.

The Power Rangers weren’t just characters – they were professionals with established careers. They constantly risked their lives to protect people from all kinds of threats, whether from other worlds or outer space. Despite repeatedly defying a strange rule simply by existing, the show still produced some of its most memorable seasons. Ultimately, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers created a fantastic series, though it wasn’t without flaws. Fortunately, after many years, one of its most ridiculous rules was finally dropped.
