In the 1994 film Star Trek Generations, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) gave advice that deeply impacted two other Star Trek captains. The movie marked a significant moment by bringing together Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), effectively passing the torch to the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and establishing them as the new leads for the Star Trek film series.
Captain Kirk, thought lost for 78 years, was actually held within the Nexus – a strange realm outside of normal space. Captain Picard discovered him there after being sent to the same place. Together, they had to find a way back to the 24th century and prevent Dr. Tolian Soran from destroying the Veridian system, which would have resulted in millions of deaths.
Initially, Kirk enjoyed being in the Nexus, a place where he could experience a perfect life, free from the regrets of his past. But he soon discovered that the Nexus wasn’t truly real, and he began to think about the request for help from the man—the Captain of the Enterprise—who had contacted him.
Captain Kirk passed away in Star Trek Generations, and the guidance he offered Captain Picard significantly impacted both Picard’s and Commander Riker’s (Jonathan Frakes) lives going forward.
Kirk’s Quote To Picard Changed 2 Star Trek Captains’ Lives
Before agreeing to help Captain Picard with his mission, Captain Kirk wondered if Picard had any plans to retire. Picard said he didn’t, and Kirk then shared what would be his final piece of advice.
Listen to me carefully. Don’t accept any promotion or transfer that would move you away from your current position on the bridge. As long as you’re there, you have the power to truly make a difference.
Captain Kirk’s prediction proved true when Captain Picard followed his advice. After leading the USS Enterprise-D for seven years – a ship that was later destroyed in the film Star Trek Generations – Picard continued to captain another Enterprise, the USS Enterprise-E, for nine more years. We only saw glimpses of those adventures in the movies Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis.
Picard’s decision to stay as Captain of the Enterprise had a significant effect on the career of his First Officer, Will Riker. As shown in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Best of Both Worlds,” Riker declined opportunities to captain other starships because he specifically wanted to remain on the Enterprise.
Commander Riker hoped to captain the Federation’s flagship, the Enterprise, after Picard retired. However, by 2379 in Star Trek: Nemesis, Jean-Luc wasn’t ready to step down. With his wedding to Deanna Troi approaching, Riker couldn’t wait any longer and ultimately accepted a position as Captain of the USS Titan instead.
What Happened To Picard & Riker’s Careers As Star Trek Captains
Starfleet Command finally relieved Captain Picard of his command of the Starship Enterprise. They needed him for a critical mission: rescuing the Romulan people as their sun began to explode. Picard agreed to become an Admiral and leave the Enterprise-E, with his first officer, Worf (Michael Dorn), taking over as captain.
In 2385, a surprise attack on Mars by artificial lifeforms – later discovered to be a plot by the Romulan Zhat Vash – wiped out the Federation fleet that was being built to rescue Romulans. This led the Federation to withdraw its forces and cancel the rescue mission. Disappointed by this decision, Admiral Picard left Starfleet and retired to his family’s vineyard in La Barre, France.
Captain Riker was in command of the USS Titan until 2385, when his son, Thad Troi-Riker, tragically died from a rare disease. Following this loss, Riker and Counselor Troi left Starfleet and settled on the planet Nepenthe with their family. Years later, in 2399, Admiral Picard and Soji sought temporary shelter with Will and Deanna, as seen in the first season of Star Trek: Picard.
In the first season of Star Trek: Picard, Captain Riker led a mission on the USS Zheng He to save Picard and his team aboard La Sirena from the Romulans, who were holding them on the planet Coppelius. Then, in season three, Riker teamed up with Picard again to commandeer the USS Titan-A. They ultimately brought their old crew from the USS Enterprise-D back together for a final showdown against the Borg.
In Star Trek Generations, Captain Picard thought about retiring, possibly because he discovered his family had perished in a fire. Though he briefly questioned continuing as captain, advice from Captain Kirk likely strengthened his resolve. Unfortunately, this meant Will Riker didn’t have the opportunity to take command of the Enterprise.
