Three years ago, Disney+ unexpectedly removed a well-received series from its catalog. Although the streaming service has created a lot of original content for major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, not all of Disney’s properties have fared so well. While some shows, such as Percy Jackson and the Olympians, have been successful, others, like Sally Wainwright’s historical adventure series Renegade Nell, were canceled after just one season. Even more shows have simply disappeared from Disney+, with no plans for a return.
In May 2023, Disney announced it would be cutting costs by removing several original shows and movies from Disney+ and Hulu. These included popular titles like the fantasy series Willow (a sequel to the 1988 film), John Stamos’ Big Shot, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Disney+ wasn’t alone in this practice – it followed a similar move by HBO Max. This shift changed expectations for streaming services and damaged the relationship between studios, creators, and viewers.
Disney+ removed several shows in 2023, including the series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. This series continued the story of the popular 1990s The Mighty Ducks movies. Those original films, starring Emilio Estevez, were a huge hit with audiences, even inspiring the creation of a professional hockey team and helping launch the careers of actors like Joshua Jackson and Kenan Thompson.
The Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers delighted fans by reuniting original cast members like Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay, Marguerite Moreau, Elden Henson, Vincent LaRusso, and Justin Wong. It also added exciting new characters played by stars such as Lauren Graham and Josh Duhamel. The show successfully recaptured the heart of the original Mighty Ducks movies, focusing on a diverse group of kids learning the importance of teamwork, having fun, and building strong friendships.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Offered A Modernized Take On The Mighty Ducks Franchise
The original Mighty Ducks movies definitely capture the spirit of the early 90s. Re-watching them today feels wonderfully nostalgic, bringing back memories of carefree childhood days playing with friends and dreaming big. They’re lighthearted, funny, and truly feel-good – the ideal movies to watch when you need a little comfort. It’s no surprise they’ve remained popular for so long, which is why Disney+ decided to create a sequel series.
Just like the original Mighty Ducks movies brought joy to a generation, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers does the same for today’s kids. However, these new characters, especially Evan Morrow (played by Brady Noon) and his mom Alex (Lauren Graham), are growing up in a very different world. They’re surrounded by social media and video games, and the Mighty Ducks hockey team isn’t the scrappy underdog anymore. Now, they’re a top team with a fancy practice facility, tough tryouts, and a lot of expenses.
A new hockey team is formed, bringing together a group of energetic and likeable young players who are coached by Alex and, initially, rink owner Gordon Bombay (later taken over by Coach Cole, played by Duhamel). The show’s story is straightforward, but it successfully expands on the world created by the Mighty Ducks movies without simply repeating them. Just as Gordon Bombay did in the original films, Alex offers a relatable character for those who grew up with the series, and the team’s diverse group of players lets even more young viewers imagine themselves playing hockey.
As a big fan of the original, I genuinely loved The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. It wasn’t an Emmy winner, though critics really liked it – it scored an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes – but that’s not the point. It did exactly what a good sequel should: it told a new, compelling story with fresh characters while still capturing the heart of the show I grew up with. Honestly, like all the shows Disney cancelled, it deserved a much longer run.
