3 worst parts of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne farewell (otherwise it was great)
Bidding adieu to Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath was never going to be a breeze. Yet, through some excellent coordination by Sharon Osbourne and others, they orchestrated what could almost be considered a small miracle, delivering an outstanding farewell performance.
The majority of the bands performed exceptionally, and the supergroups showcased impressive talent on stage. Kudos to Tom Morello for assembling such a stellar lineup. However, while the concert was largely successful, it wasn’t flawless. Neither Ozzy nor Sabbath should bear any blame for its imperfections.
In another piece, we’ll focus on the highlights, but for now, let me share three aspects that somewhat overshadowed what would have otherwise been an extraordinary concert. I hope these parts are forgettable, and instead, you’ll remember the amazing performance by Ozzy and Sabbath.
3 worst parts of the otherwise fantastic Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath farewell concert
Slayer wearing their own merch
The concert was organized with multiple purposes in mind, chief among them being a fundraiser for various charities. However, it was also intended as a tribute and farewell to two legendary figures: Ozzy Osbourne and his former band Black Sabbath. This part of the event wasn’t a secret; everyone involved was aware of it.
It’s clear why numerous bands opted to don T-shirts or merchandise bearing images of Ozzy or Sabbath during their performances, but not Slayer. Instead, the speed metal band chose to prioritize themselves over the event and wore their own merchandise, seemingly oblivious to the essence of the concert itself.
As a dedicated fan, it wasn’t exactly advantageous for me that they performed before Metallica, a band I consider as my Mozart amidst Slayer’s Salieri in the realm of thrash metal. Frankly, they seemed to fall short compared to the genuine thrash metal titans. Perhaps, it would have been wiser for them to give this event a miss altogether, considering their performance might not have lived up to expectations.
Sammy Hagar’s signing his own old song
Each artist was obligated to include at least one Ozzy Osbourne or Black Sabbath piece in their setlist, and Music Director Tom Morello skillfully ensured that no song was overplayed. The artists also probably had the freedom to play some of their own songs, but Hagar’s selection seemed particularly egotistical.
At the start of his career, before achieving fame with Van Halen or ruining the band, he was a member of an unremarkable group called Montrose. During their farewell performance, Hagar joined Supergroup B, and somehow arranged for the forgettable song “Rock Candy” by Montrose to be played.
With not many people showing interest in the song, it seemed like Hagar was attempting to peddle his own merchandise amidst Ozzy and Sabbath’s farewell. Perhaps he should have showcased an original piece instead, say a rendition of “Big Rock Candy Mountain.” That would have been equally unappealing, but at least it would have been entertaining.
Ozzy seemingly being left on stage
It’s unlikely that this scenario occurred, but at the conclusion of Black Sabbath’s concert and after they had played their final note, the band members exited the stage. However, Ozzy seemed to be stuck in his chair and couldn’t follow. The live-streaming camera seemed to show him asking someone to assist him.
It seems like the intention might have been for Ozzy to perform alone to receive the final applause, but it felt awkward given that he has Parkinson’s disease which affects his ability to stand and walk. However, it could be that the unusual appearance was just due to the way the film crew was positioned.
