3 things we learned from Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry
As a long-time boxing fan, I have seen my fair share of fights and fighters throughout the years. And while Jake Paul may not be a traditional boxer, there’s no denying that he knows how to put on a show and sell out arenas.
On July 20, 2023, Jake Paul defeated Mike Perry in round six via knockout. Following his victory, Paul addressed the UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, proposing a potential future match. Disregarding this announcement for the moment, it’s important to acknowledge it. Initially, Paul was scheduled to fight Mike Tyson, but health concerns with Tyson forced a postponement. Perry, a previous UFC combatant and current BKFC titleholder, stepped in as a replacement, enabling Paul to go ahead with the bout.
Here are three things we learned from the fight.
1. Jake Paul needs to fight someone his own size
Paul has a history of picking easy opponents for fights. He often faces fighters who are past their prime or less experienced than him. The one time he fought an opponent at his level and size, he lost. We’re not implying Paul lacks talent – he certainly possesses it. However, he isn’t being challenged enough in the ring. This latest fight serves as evidence. And we aren’t the only ones with this perspective – here are some quotes from professional fighters, fans, and media on the topic.
In the sixth round, Mike Perry is unable to continue as Jake Paul records three knockdowns against him. Yet, it’s essential to recall an earlier encounter where Paul encountered defeat when squaring off against someone of similar stature and background.

Why continue the charade that Jake Paul can defeat individuals who match his physical stature and age when, in fact, he has previously lost against such an opponent?

Why doesn’t Jake Paul consistently face boxers of his own age and size in the ring instead? He often fights smaller opponents instead. Is it possible that he believes winning against larger opponents is the only way he can prove himself?

Jake Paul recently won a fight against Mike Perry, who is 25 pounds heavier than him. Paul also had a significant reach advantage during the match. Some may find this victory amusing given that Paul previously lost to an opponent of similar size.

Mike Perry’s tenacity has often worked against him. I’ll be intrigued when Jake Paul faces off against professional boxers who match his stature. #paulperry #boxing

2. Mike Perry might need to retire
After their bout, Perry was dismissed from BKFC with a ceremonial tweet by its co-owner Conor McGregor. McGregor wrote, “Mike, you’re out and can go compete in your grungy boxing league, good luck with the stench of it. You’ve been let go.” This message’s authenticity is uncertain, but following Perry’s defeat, he may be reaching an age where retirement from fighting becomes necessary. He recently announced his own combat promotion, so perhaps this is a perfect opportunity for him to concentrate on that endeavor.
“Mike, it’s time for you to leave. Go represent at your raw-knuckle fighting championship with its pungent allure and best of luck.”) #bareknucklefc

3. Jake Paul can sell out arenas
Say what you want about Jake Paul but the man SELLS OUT! #PaulPerry

Despite the fact that not everyone is a fan of Paul, it’s undeniable that he continues to attract large crowds. The arena was completely sold out and the pay-per-view event was predicted to be a major success. People seem to have strong feelings about Paul, whether they admire him or despise him; nonetheless, he’s reaping substantial rewards. Bravo to him!
