3 Things to Remember Before Watching Deadpool & Wolverine

I’ve had the pleasure of following the captivating journey of these iconic X-Men characters, from their origins to their most recent adventures. As a longtime fan, I’ve witnessed Hugh Jackman’s remarkable portrayal of Wolverine since his introduction in the 2000 film “X-Men.” With each movie, his character has evolved, leaving an indelible mark on both the X-Men universe and me as a viewer.

In a unique turn of events for Marvel, Deadpool, brilliantly brought to life by Ryan Reynolds, stands out as an exceptional character. He’s an irreverent hero saddled with eternal life and humor tailored for adolescent audiences. Having graced our screens with two movies under 20th Century Fox, Deadpool became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s merger with the company. The acquisition now allows the wisecracking antihero to join the Marvel fold, an event he seems eagerly anticipating based on the trailer.

As a longtime comic book fan and avid moviegoer, I’m genuinely excited about the upcoming release of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” set to hit theaters on July 26. Having grown up reading these iconic characters in their various comic book adventures, I can only imagine the immense pressure Marvel must feel as they enter a new era in cinema.

Deadpool has made an appearance in two previous films, while Wolverine has played a significant role in multiple X-Men movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The status of the MCU

Marvel has been going through a rough patch but is now making progress. Their last three films from last year were “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” and “The Marvels.” For a complete viewing experience, audiences needed to have seen previous Marvel productions. The same applies to “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” In the film, Deadpool is summoned by the Time Variance Authority when a man named Paradox (played by Matthew Macfadyen) calls him to a room and explains that he has a mission. It’s during this encounter that Deadpool adopts the self-given nickname “Marvel Jesus.”

The Time Variance Agency (TVA) are responsible for maintaining the single, unchanging timeline in the multiverse – the “Sacred Timeline.” They prevent the formation of alternate timelines and eliminate existing ones, which they refer to as “pruning.” When a timeline is pruned, its inhabitants aren’t erased; instead, they are transported to the Void. In the series “Loki,” this is where Loki encounters various versions of himself, such as Kid Loki, Classic Loki, Boastful Loki, and Alligator Loki. However, the Void isn’t just home to variants; it also houses a colossal, ominous cloud creature named Alioth, which has devoured numerous exiled variants and serves as one of its guardians.

The Deadpool movies

As a long-time fan of Marvel comics, I’ve always been intrigued by the character of Deadpool. His quick wit and vulgar humor have always stood out to me, making him one of my favorite anti-heroes. So when I heard that Ryan Reynolds was going to bring the Merc with a Mouth to life on the big screen, I was both excited and skeptical.

In 2016, a new and improved Deadpool received his initial solo film. Wade Wilson develops feelings for a woman named Vanessa and plans to marry her. However, shortly after proposing, he receives devastating news: he has terminal cancer. Desperate for a cure, he’s offered an experimental treatment by the Weapon X project. This procedure grants him the ability to awaken latent mutant genes within him. During the process, he is brutally tortured by the project’s chief scientist, named Ajax (whose real name is Francis). Despite the grueling ordeal, Wade emerges with remarkable healing and regenerative powers akin to Wolverine.

After taking on the identity of Deadpool, Wade sets out on a mission to track down the man who inflicted pain upon him in the past, seeking retribution. He nearly accomplishes his goal but is intercepted by Colossus and X-Men newcomer Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who attempt to persuade him to join their team instead. Deadpool, however, remains resolute in his decision. The film concludes with Deadpool exacting his revenge on Ajax and rekindling his relationship with Vanessa.

In the second film, Deadpool is depicted relentlessly eliminating mob bosses and their ilk. However, one of these organizations discovers his hideout and kills Vanessa. Devastated by this loss, Deadpool attempts to take his own life. His body is later discovered by Colossus, who once more proposes that Deadpool join the X-Men. This time, Deadpool consents. While answering a distress call at a mutant orphanage, Deadpool comes across a mutant named Russell Collins, also known as Firefist. Upon discovering that an employee was maltreating Firefist, Deadpool puts an end to the abuser. Consequently, Deadpool and Firefist are apprehended and incarcerated in the Ice Box, where their powers are suppressed, rendering them powerless and vulnerable to death.

In an alternate timeline, the mutant and time-traveler named Cable aims to eliminate Russell. Deadpool intervenes, preventing the assassination, and the two depart with each other. Despite his reservations, Deadpool forms a squad called X-Force to rescue Russell – only he and Domino ( portrayed by Zazie Beets) manage to survive. Escaping, Russell sets free Juggernaut, who vows retaliation against the abusive orphanage headmaster. Cable alerts Deadpool that if Russell executes the headmaster, he transforms into a lethal serial killer, murdering Cable’s family. Deadpool negotiates with Cable to discuss Russell’s intentions, and Cable concedes. Ultimately, when they confront Russell, Deadpool fails to persuade him, leading to a standoff between the two. In an unexpected move, Cable shoots at Russell, but Deadpool takes the bullet, donning his power-suppressing collar and sacrificing himself. Shocked by his actions, Cable reverses time, positioning a Skee ball token – left behind by Vanessa after her demise – in place of the bullet that would have struck Wade. A taxi driver then ends the headmaster’s life instead.

Later on, Deadpool employs Cable’s time-travel gadget for a journey into the past, ultimately preventing Vanessa from being wounded by gunshots.

The X-Men movies

In the year 2000, Hugh Jackman made his debut as Wolverine in the movie “X-Men.” During this film, we are also introduced to other prominent characters such as Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Halle Berry as Storm, James Marsden as Cyclops, and later, Victor Creed a.k.a Sabertooth. In the initial “X-Men” installment, Magneto attempts to harness Rogue’s abilities to transform world leaders into mutants, aiming for broader acceptance of their kind. The X-Men thwart his plan, and Logan subsequently becomes part of their team.

In the second X-Men movie, titled “X2,” Logan embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries of his past. The man responsible for coating his skeleton with adamantium, a fictitious metal, was Colonel William Stryker. The crucial point is that the X-Men manage to thwart Stryker’s plan to eliminate every mutant on Earth. Following this failed attempt, a catastrophic flood wipes out Stryker’s lab. Tragically, Jean Grey (the woman whom Cyclops and Wolverine harbor secret feelings for) perishes as she selflessly helps the X-Men escape during their hasty departure.

In the third film, Professor Xavier meets his demise at the hands of Jean Grey’s doppelganger, the Phoenix. This tragedy prompts Wolverine to assume command of the X-Men. The Phoenix is later enlisted by Magneto, but due to his inability to control her immense powers, she breaks free and becomes a formidable adversary. Consequently, Wolverine finds himself in the agonizing position of having to eliminate Jean Grey or a likeness of her.

In simpler terms, The three movies leading up to 2017’s “Logan” aren’t essential for understanding Deadpool and Wolverine. However, it’s important to be familiar with the events of “Logan.” Due to a mutant apocalypse, there are only a few mutants left, including X-Men members, many of whom have perished. In this film, Logan comes across a young girl named Laura who possesses claws like him after Logan’s blood was utilized in her creation. The key aspect of “Logan” is that Logan’s ability to heal is significantly weakened, and he faces his clone who ultimately kills him. Jackman has expressed no interest in reprising his role as Logan or Wolverine, but Reynolds managed to convince him to don the claws once more for “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
