3 Star Wars projects that just got cancelled (and one in danger)

As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who has seen the highs and lows of this beloved franchise, I must say that the news about the potential cancellation of “The Mandalorian” season 4 and the indefinite hold on Taika Waititi’s upcoming Star Wars movie has left me feeling a bit like a Wookiee losing its favorite Kessel Run-smuggled bantha-burger.

scarcely any franchises are as enduring as Star Wars; George Lucas’ groundbreaking creation has been adding value to its audience since the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in cinemas in 1977. It went on to reach even greater milestones a few years later with the sequel The Empire Strikes Back, often hailed as one of the finest sequels ever produced.

After that point, it has wrapped up its initial trilogy, introduced a contentious prequel trilogy, and (for now) concluded the Skywalker Saga with a new trilogy featuring both old and new characters. Throughout this journey, there have been encounters with Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, Darth Maul, and others. Along the way, it has showcased impressive special effects, faced off against the Empire, and even included characters like Jar Jar Binks. Despite ups and downs, the series continues to thrive today.

For decades, the Star Wars Universe has been vast, extending into comics, video games, books, and beyond. However, in more recent times, it’s branched out into live-action television as well. The advent of Disney Plus streaming service has enabled the continuation of those tales on a smaller screen, and even introduced some fresh narratives.

Everything began when the critically praised show “The Mandalorian” premiered, introducing the renowned characters Mando and Grogu. It then expanded with two spinoff series titled “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Ahsoka.” Additionally, it revived some classic characters for their individual sequel shows, one of which is “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” where Ewan McGregor reprised his iconic role once more.

Recently, several Star Wars projects have unfortunately faced premature termination over the past few months. Some failed to live up to expectations and were subsequently canceled, while others never made it off the ground. Interestingly, it has been reported that the team behind an already-renewed next season has opted to abandon the series in favor of creating a film continuation instead.

Let us now examine the Star Wars productions that unfortunately won’t see the light of day or will not come back for further development.

The Acolyte

Unfortunately, the latest Star Wars production, “The Acolyte,” which had an impressive debut with 11 million viewers this summer and received favorable reviews initially, was eventually cancelled. As time went on, its reception grew more mixed and viewership numbers dwindled, despite the initial success. Despite this, it seemed to have enough support for a second season. However, the high production cost (estimated at $230 million) proved detrimental in the end, as Disney Plus decided that another season would not be financially viable.

Unfortunately, the show didn’t get enough opportunity to expand and develop unique elements since it presented a fresh perspective within the Star Wars universe. Amandla Stenberg plays the lead role in this production, which is characterized as a mystery-thriller series taking place within the Star Wars galaxy. The storyline unfolds after the High Republic era, preceding the Skywalker Saga events, giving it a distinct feel by avoiding the typical themes that the films focused on.

Despite having a lot of potential, The Acolyte didn’t get enough opportunity to expand its viewer base due to streaming platforms. The challenge with streaming series is that their success is often evaluated within a very short period, leaving little room for struggling shows to gather a dedicated audience. Conversely, broadcast TV shows have had the luxury of time throughout the years to cultivate loyal fanbases thanks to their consistent year-round airing.

Due to the well-known franchise it belonged to, The Acolyte faced incredibly lofty anticipation. Unfortunately, being streamed instead of shown in traditional formats meant it never managed to cultivate its own viewership to handle such towering expectations.

Kevin Feige’s Star Wars movie

In our discussion, we pointed out that Star Wars is among the top movie franchises worldwide. However, there are only a handful of series that can truly rival it, and one of those is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Established by its president, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios’ MCU has raked in more than $30 million since its launch in 2008. To date, it has produced 34 films (with numerous others planned), and similarly to Star Wars, it has delved into the realm of streaming TV on Disney Plus in recent years.

In an intriguing turn of events, it was almost a shared endeavor between two renowned franchises when Kevin Feige, known for Marvel productions, was slated to helm a Star Wars film. This exciting news broke back in 2019, with The Hollywood Reporter verifying that Feige was working on the project. Fast forward to 2021, it was disclosed that Michael Waldron, the writer behind Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, would pen the script for this Star Wars film. Feige expressed his affection for the Star Wars universe, stating he cherished “the idea of discovering fresh characters and unexplored locations within it.

It turns out, not long ago, he disclosed that the project had been cancelled. This revelation was made during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, which took place at the premiere of The Marvels towards the end of last year. When asked if it was still happening, he replied with a straightforward “No.

It’s sad that Kevin Feige won’t be working on any Star Wars projects anymore, given how skillfully he has breathed life into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, there’s been no clear explanation as to why this didn’t work out. In the time since it was first announced, Disney’s handling of both the Marvel and Star Wars franchises has evolved considerably. Now, they seem to be adopting a minimalistic approach, and with Marvel experiencing some unexpected box office disappointments last year, Feige might have decided to concentrate on his own universe for the moment.

Here’s hoping that, at some point in the future, the stars can align for this crossover again.

The Mandalorian

It appears you haven’t misunderstood – rumors suggest that “The Mandalorian” won’t be coming back for a fourth season. Despite speculation about its renewal, a trusted source in the industry, Daniel Richtman, now claims that there will be no season 4 (although it was previously anticipated). However, the reason for this cancellation isn’t due to low viewership; on the contrary, the show’s immense popularity has led Lucasfilm to transfer Mando and Grogu’s story from the small screen to the big screen instead.

When it was disclosed that a movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu was in the works, apprehensions about the Disney Plus series escalated. Interestingly, the artwork unveiled for the film was even labeled as “The Mandalorian Season 4,” hinting at a shift in plans to produce another season. This revelation left fans speculating, as the show had already been granted a fourth season.

According to Richtman, despite the upcoming release of the film, there won’t be a fourth season of The Mandalorian and Grogu series. Instead, it seems they will continue their story in future Star Wars movies. This development highlights the appeal of Din Djarin and “Baby Yoda”, but it’s unfortunate news for fans eagerly waiting for another season of The Mandalorian.

It’s unlikely that Lucasfilm and Disney will reveal this until after the film’s premiere to prevent viewers from dismissing it if the show has concluded. However, given that The Mandalorian was both Disney Plus’ first original series and one of its most successful, a continuation featuring Pedro Pascal’s character and Grogu is definitely intriguing. It could be due to Pascal’s packed schedule or perhaps Lucasfilm deciding the movie would better serve the storyline. In any case, more Mandalorian and Grogu can only mean good things for fans.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel excited knowing that the tales of these cherished characters will carry on in the not-too-distant future.

In danger: Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie

A director who was previously involved with Marvel and is now connected to Star Wars for quite some time is Taika Waititi. Known for his innovative direction, he’s already ventured into the distant galaxy when he helmed an episode of ‘The Mandalorian’. Fans have been eagerly anticipating what unique touch he would bring to a full-length film. Yet, it’s been four years since the project was announced and there hasn’t been any substantial news about its nature or status.

According to Daniel Richtman’s latest update, the production of the movie has been temporarily halted indefinitely. While this doesn’t guarantee its cancellation, considering the recent termination of The Acolyte and the current instability within the Star Wars franchise, fans are growing anxious that the project might be subtly scrapped without any official announcement.

Last year, Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm playfully commented that Taika Waititi, the director, was moving at a leisurely pace. Waititi himself has admitted to this slow progress and stated he was working on something, but due to his busy schedule, it was probably delayed. The speculation of an indefinite hold could be that delay becoming reality, which leaves Star Wars fans concerned that the film might not materialize given the current buzz surrounding the Star Wars universe.

Here’s hoping that it does come to fruition in the near future.
