3 possible characters Robert Picardo could be playing in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

As a long-time Trekkie with memories of Star Trek: Voyager etched deeply into my neural pathways, I must say, Robert Picardo’s return as The Doctor has me buzzing with anticipation! I’ve seen enough sci-fi to know that time travel and holographic beings can get a bit tricky, so let’s speculate on the possibilities.

Robert Picardo is returning once more to his iconic role as The Doctor. This time, he’ll be seen in the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series, a show set after the happenings of Star Trek: Discovery, approximately 1,000 years following and intertwined with events from Voyager. Given this temporal shift, I can’t help but ponder if the incarnation of The Doctor we’ll see in Starfleet Academy will be the same as the one from Voyager.

It’s not unreasonable to think he might reprise his role as the character he played in Voyager. Given that he also appeared in Star Trek: Prodigy as the same character, but that was an animated series, it seems more feasible for him to play a younger version of the character since physical aging isn’t a concern in this case. Since The Doctor is a hologram, he doesn’t age like humans do. Instead, he exists as a projection.

It seems that this raises the question: Could it be that they plan to replace the actor because he’s aging, given that The Doctor is merely one of many holographic representations? After all, the character could potentially be any number of individuals. Here are a few possibilities.

1. The Doctor from Voyager/Prodigy

It’s entirely reasonable that he is simply reprising his role as the same character, and similar to Q or The Doctor, he may alter his appearance to suit the new circumstances more effectively. This change is quite possible.

2. The Doctor from another ship, turned off for centuries

Is it possible that Picardo is portraying “The Doctor,” but could this be a new version of the EMH Mark I we’ve been familiar with for years? It seems there might have been another EMH Mark I discovered at some point, which has only recently been reactivated, perhaps unintentionally.

3. A new version of The Doctor

There have been multiple iterations of the EMH character. Unfortunately, Andy Dick portrayed the EMH Mark II, and it seems he won’t return. However, could we possibly see an EMH Mark III instead? If not, perhaps for the sake of a time jump, an EMH Mark C (100)? This new version might incorporate the likeness of the original EMH’s creator, Robert Zimmerman, and could be more sophisticated, comfortable, and even more physically present.
