3 of the best moments of UFC Vegas 97

As a seasoned MMA fan, I’ve seen my fair share of fights and controversies, but UFC Vegas 97 was a night to remember! The main event between Burns and Brady was intense, but it was the undercard that truly caught my eye.

At the UFC APEX last Saturday, September 7th, UFC Vegas 97 unfolded, showcasing numerous promising, ambitious rising stars. The main fight was a welterweight matchup between No. 6 ranked Gilbert Burns and No. 8 ranked Sean Brady, both aiming to make a strong impression. In the co-main event, No. 6 Jessica Andrade faced off against No. 8 Natalia Silva in a women’s flyweight bout. There were plenty of other exciting moments as well, with several emerging fighters continuing to leave their mark. Although it wasn’t one of the UFC’s largest events, there were still some entertaining highlights that are worth checking out if you missed them live.

3. Controversy reigns in Jacqueline Amorim’s victory

Tonight’s third preliminary match featured Jacqueline Amorim versus Vanessa Demopoulos in a women’s strawweight contest. Prior to this fight, Amorim had won her last two bouts, against Montserrat Ruiz in 2023 and Cory McKenna in March. Meanwhile, Demopoulos also entered the ring with a winning streak of two fights, having defeated Kanako Murata in 2023 and Emily Ducote in May.

In this match, a victory for either woman would have been significant. However, Amorim took control of the fight quite early against Demopoulos. At exactly 3 minutes and 28 seconds into the first round, Amorim successfully executed an armbar, prompting Demopoulos to surrender. Upon initial observation, it appeared to be a clean submission. But upon closer inspection and watching the replay, there might have been some questionable glove grabbing on Amorim’s part.

Demopoulos argues that Amorim managed to insert her fingers into her glove during the match. This might have given Amoril an advantage in applying the submission hold, causing Demopoulos to give up even sooner. Throughout most of the fight, Amorim was persistently trying for a submission, and eventually succeeded. From the moment the armbar was initiated, Demopoulos shouted at the referee, claiming that Amorim had fingers in her glove.

After the battle had ended, Demopoulos continued to argue her point to referee Jacob Montalvo. However, her arguments were unsuccessful, and Amorim emerged victorious. Unfortunately for Demopoulos, her pleas made no difference in this instance. Amorim then claimed that nothing illegal occurred during the fight. Despite the dispute, it marked Amorim’s third consecutive victory.

2. Chris Padilla’s elbow from hell on Rongzhu

In the evening’s main preliminary bout, Chris Padilla faced off with Rongzhu who made his comeback to the promotion following his release. Invited to compete in the “Road To UFC” tournament, Rongzhu emerged victorious in three consecutive matches, earning him a new contract with the UFC tonight against Padilla.

It turned out that Rongzhu’s opponent, Padilla, had different plans in mind. Padilla’s last fight was in April where he defeated James Llontop by submission in the first round. That bout largely went in Padilla’s favor. In the first round alone, Padilla landed more impactful blows on Rongzhu, although none were powerful enough to knock him out. However, things took a turn for the worse in the second round.

At 4:14 into the second round, Padilla delivered a powerful elbow to Rongzhu that ultimately secured his victory. Initially, Rongzhu protested, believing it was an eye poke. Upon closer inspection, however, it became clear that it was indeed an elbow that swiftly closed Rongzhu’s eye. The doctor stopped the fight in favor of Padilla, a decision that seemed justifiable given the situation. This knockout might have been one of the most brutal of the night, and it’s not hard to understand why.

1. Natalia Silva makes a statement against Jessica Andrade

In the secondary headliner of UFC Vegas 97, Jessica Andrade (ranked 6th) faced Natalia Silva (ranked 8th) in a women’s flyweight match-up. Andrade has been victorious in her last two bouts, defeating Mackenzie Dern in the previous year and Marina Rodriguez just this April. As for Silva, she’s been on a roll, with her latest win coming against Viviane Araujo in February of this year.

Recently, Silva has been on an impressive streak. If Silva manages to defeat Andrade, who was once the Strawweight Women’s Champion, it would be a significant victory. Such a win could catapult Silva into title discussions and potentially set up a title eliminator fight or a bout with the current No. 1 contender for the Women’s Flyweight Championship.

In the end, Silva’s bout with Andrade ended in a full match, with all judges awarding the victory to Silva by unanimous decision. This win over Andrade is significant for Silva and it’s worth emphasizing. With this triumph, Silva may find himself in discussions for any title contention. After the fight, Silva made his intentions clear, expressing his desire to become champion. As we move forward, it will be intriguing to see how things unfold, but one thing that is certain is that Silva is on an impressive winning streak.
