3 Marvel movies you must watch before Venom 3: The Last Dance
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who’s been around since the dawn of the Sony Spider-Verse, I can confidently say that the upcoming “Venom: The Last Dance” is an event not to be missed. The trilogy has been a rollercoaster ride of symbiotic mayhem, and it’s about time we bid adieu to our favorite anti-hero, Eddie Brock, and his alien buddy, Venom.
As a die-hard Venom fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the grand finale of this epic trilogy – “Venom: The Last Dance”. It feels surreal to even utter those words considering the series is still relatively young, making its debut just in 2018. However, there’s a certain nobility in recognizing when it’s time to take a bow, and Sony has graciously chosen to bring our beloved Marvel symbiote’s tale to an end with this final installment.
As a gamer, I find myself once more stepping into the shoes of Eddie Brock, the hero I never asked to be. After my chaotic encounters with the symbiote inside me, I’ve become an unwanted fugitive, eluding the long arm of the law. But that’s not all the trouble on the horizon for this peculiar duo, as Venom’s symbiotic species from their home world have tracked me down. Worse still, they might have found their creator too – The King in Black, Knull.
The current events in Sony’s Spider-Man universe are quite exciting! If you’d like to be fully up-to-speed before watching Venom 3, here are the movies you should check out first.
Venom (2018)
Revisiting the starting point of the franchise, Venom offers a unique origin tale. Eddie Brock once had it all, but when he uncovers a major scoop, he simultaneously loses his fiancée, his job, and his home. Believing life holds no purpose anymore, an investigation leads him to an extraterrestrial symbiote called Venom. This being not only bonds with Eddie but also guards and protects him.
An unusual alliance, this one, benefits Eddie by providing him essential information, all while keeping Venom thriving. Though it adds more chaos to his already tumultuous life, it also offers him a chance to combat evil forces that he couldn’t before meeting Venom.
Venom is absolutely wild! Despite mixed reviews from critics, it proved to be a massive hit with audiences, earning over $800 million at the box office. Many viewers recommend it as a classic, mindless popcorn movie that will keep you entertained for its 90-minute duration and help you momentarily forget about life’s troubles.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
In the latest action-packed film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, we find Eddie Brock embarking on yet another thrilling escapade. This being the sequel from Sony’s series, it delved into their struggles to cooperate effectively. While Eddie yearned for serenity in his existence, Venom craved human brains – an undeniably accurate portrayal of the movie’s plotline.
Essentially, the main theme of the sequel revolves around the emergence of a new antagonist, Carnage. A violent act by Cletus Kasady, biting Eddie’s hand, led to the creation of a new symbiote within him. This empowered him to free his long-term partner from prison for their wedding and to seek vengeance on those who harmed them in the past. Consequently, Venom and Eddie find themselves needing to set aside their disagreements to confront their most formidable adversary yet.
The film titled “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” is noticeably darker and more daring compared to its first installment. While not all fans shared the same enthusiasm for this sequel as they did with the original, it still holds significant value to the overall franchise.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
It’s not a trick of the eye; we’ve added a Marvel Cinematic Universe film to our list. If you’ve seen Venom: Let There Be Carnage, you’ll understand Spider-Man: No Way Home’s significance within the movie series, as it doesn’t belong to the Sony Pictures Universe where the Venom franchise resides.
The movie delves into Peter Parker’s efforts to seal the box of secrets that Mysterio had unintentionally opened by revealing Spider-Man’s real identity to everyone at the end of the previous film, Spider-Man: Far From Home. This sets off a grand spectacle involving both heroes and villains from various dimensions, leading to some significant comebacks of characters from past Spider-Man movies.
In essence, Venom doesn’t play a significant part throughout the movie, but you should still watch it to the end for clarity on the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It could also potentially influence Venom 3.
Got more time? Here are the rest of the movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe!
Although the Venom movies can each tell their own story independently, they are also interconnected within Sony’s Spider-Man universe. The studio has been making efforts to develop this universe since it debuted the first Venom film in 2018, but so far, it hasn’t gained much traction beyond these films. Critics and fans alike have expressed disappointment with several other live-action movies produced by the studio, which haven’t fared well at the box office.
Since they’re all part of the same Spider-Verse, it might be a good idea to check out or revisit them before the premiere of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”.
- Morbius (2022)
- Madame Web (2024)
Since the performance of these characters may not affect the storyline of Venom 3, given Sony’s plans to shift focus due to their poor box office returns, if you’re intrigued to explore the live-action Spider-Verse – particularly before Kraven the Hunter debuts – they offer potential viewing choices for you.
