3 keys to victory for Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya at UFC 305

As a seasoned gamer of MMA fights who has witnessed countless bouts from the comfort of my living room (and occasionally the octagon), I can confidently say that UFC 305 promises to be a thrilling spectacle, especially with Dricus Du Plessis and Israel Adesanya facing off in Perth. Their history of bad blood and elite skills make this a must-watch event.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m hyped about the upcoming UFC 305 event! It’s going down at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia on August 17. The main event promises fireworks as Dricus Du Plessis, our current middleweight champ, squares off against Israel Adesanya, the formidable No. 2 contender and former dominant champion. These two have been harboring bad feelings for a while now, and their intense rivalry, coupled with their exceptional fighting skills, is set to ignite an unforgettable battle. The Australian crowd can expect nothing less than an electrifying showdown! This fight’s a 50/50 affair, with both fighters boasting solid strategies for claiming the title. It’s going to be one heck of a fight!

3 key’s to victory for Dricus Du Plessis

1. Keep consistent pressure

Du Plessis excels at putting pressure on his adversaries and feels most comfortable pushing them back. On the other hand, Adesanya prefers fighting from a defensive position, enjoying the strategy of wearing down opponents with leg kicks and long-range punches. This tactic often works to his advantage, allowing him to outclass opponents or land effective counterpunches. However, it can also be his weakness, as demonstrated in his recent title fight against Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in September 2023. That bout was one of the biggest upsets of 2023, with Adesanya allowing Strickland to advance for all five rounds. In a surprising turn of events, Strickland became the first fighter ever to drop Adesanya in his MMA career.

In the UFC 297 fight held in January 2024, Du Plessis managed to snatch Strickland’s title via split decision. This victory was achieved by Du Plessis maintaining a relentless pace, landing more impactful blows, and executing effective takedowns. He had previously defeated Brad Tavares and Robert Whittaker in similar fashion, earning decisions and a knockout respectively. If he can maintain this pace while staying alert defensively, Du Plessis may be able to knock out Adesanya, retaining his title. Additionally, Du Plessis’s high guard provides resilience against incoming punches, which could play a crucial role in his strategy of pressure.

2. Check the leg kicks

In order to maximize his chances against Adesanya, Du Plessis should strategically focus on countering leg kicks during their fight. Fighters who have defeated Adesanya in the past were able to win by effectively checking his calf kicks. This group includes Jan Blachowicz, Alex Pereira, and Strickland. By negating Adesanya’s calf kicks, these fighters weakened one of his key advantages – his ability to control fights through striking. This tactic makes it easier for opponents to apply pressure on Adesanya and out-strike him. If Du Plessis follows this strategy, he may replicate their success and potentially secure a finish, either on the ground or standing up.

3. Wrestle

In this fight, Du Plessis might triumph in a stand-up battle, but his strongest chance lies in grappling. Although Adesanya excels in striking, this will be his first encounter with an opponent who poses a genuine submission risk. Out of Du Plessis’s 21 career victories, 10 were by submission. In the past, Adesanya has struggled in wrestling situations, giving his back to opponents like Whittaker and Vettori. If a more proficient grappler like Du Plessis had been in those positions, they could have easily secured a submission. Although Adesanya may have enhanced his wrestling skills since these encounters, it might still be advantageous for Du Plessis to attempt the first submission of Adesanya, as grappling appears to be where he has the greatest opportunity for success.

3 key’s to victory for Israel Adesanya

1. Have cage awareness

Previously noted, a tactic like Adesanya preferring to fight at a distance could potentially work against him, as demonstrated in his recent bout. On the other hand, Du Plessis poses a greater threat than Strickland when it comes to closing in on opponents, thanks to his robust wrestling skills and heavier punches. Engaging close to the cage is risky territory for Adesanya when facing a more formidable adversary. Notably, Pereira managed to secure a stoppage against Adesancy, who spent much of the fight pinned against the cage, while Strickland consistently pressed Adesanya into the cage throughout their encounter, landing numerous jabs. To increase his chances against Du Plessis, Adesanya must be mindful of the cage and avoid spending too much time there. This would make it more difficult for Du Plessis to rush him, allowing Adesanya to set his range and gradually wear down Du Plessis with precise attacks.

2. Defend the takedowns

Due to Du Plessis’ superior submission skills compared to Adesanya’s past opponents, it would be risky for Adesanya to engage in ground fights with him. He should avoid repeating mistakes like exposing his back against Whittaker and Vettori in their rematches. Du Plessis not only excels in submissions but also boasts potent ground-and-pound, capable of either finishing opponents or earning points through it. If Adesanya ends up on the ground, he needs to stay composed while figuring out his next move to get back up. If he can prevent being wrestled down, he can then focus on winning with his superior striking abilities, a domain where he is technically stronger.

3. Be more aggressive

In this fight, Adesanya is not the title holder; instead, he’s the one aiming to dethrone the current champion. This implies that relying on a defensive fighting style might not be effective. If he wants to win and claim the belt, he needs to take the initiative and aggressively attempt to defeat Du Plessis.
