3 Defenders Disney+ Projects in the Works: Daredevil, Punisher, and Jessica Jones Revivals Revealed

It appears that a recent update reveals there are now three Disney+ projects featuring the Defenders characters being developed by Marvel Studios. Previously confined to Netflix, the Defenders section of the Marvel universe has seen a resurgence this year with the launch of “Daredevil: Born Again”. This adult-oriented series welcomed Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio back into their roles from the earlier “Daredevil” series on Netflix, hinting at a possible revitalization of the darker, more realistic section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s been reported that an insider, Daniel Richtman, revealed that a third project related to the Defenders is now being developed for Disney+. This upcoming title continues the legacy of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which is scheduled to release its second season sometime next year, and the “Punisher” Special Presentation. The Defenders franchise, initially intended for Netflix, has been making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Born Again” acting as its starting point.

Richtman posted his latest findings on Patreon, indicating that Krysten Ritter’s character, Jessica Jones, will soon be back in the spotlight for another Marvel Studios venture.

“Marvel is discussing doing ‘Jessica Jones’ as either a [TV] show or a special of her own.”

Krysten Ritter’s portrayal of Jessica Jones was a standout in the Marvel universe, leading her own show for three seasons on Netflix. But when the collaboration between Netflix and Marvel fell apart, the Jessica Jones series was unfortunately affected. Now, Ritter is set to reprise her role next year in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, teaming up with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and taking on Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) together.

It’s been whispered that Jessica Jones is among a group of ex-Defenders characters potentially making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as both Iron Fist and Luke Cage are also said to be part of the Daredevil revival.

Every Defenders Series Reported To Be In Development at Marvel Studios

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

Kickstarting the Defenders resurgence this year, “Daredevil: Born Again” reunited Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio in their emblematic roles as Daredevil and Wilson Fisk from the Marvel universe. This latest series unfolds several years after the Netflix show “Daredevil,” with D’Onofrio’s Fisk now occupying the mayor’s office of New York City.

In the coming year, production is underway for Season 2, which will continue from where Season 1 ended dramatically, with Mayor Fisk declaring war on the masked vigilantes in New York City. This event prompts our series’ titular superhero to gather a team to face this fresh danger.

Punisher

In the forthcoming “Punisher” Special Presentation, Jon Bernthal’s character, Frank Castle (also known as the Punisher), will once more take center stage in the MCU after reprising his role as the tough anti-hero in “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1. This standalone story about the Punisher is being crafted by Bernthal himself and is expected to carry an R-rating, in line with fan expectations.

The exact date for the Special Presentation hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s anticipated to drop early in the next year. It continues the storyline where Frank manages to break free from Wilson Fisk’s grip (as depicted in the finale of Season 1 of Born Again) and confronts a new, powerful female crime boss.

Jessica Jones

In a new development, it’s been announced that Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as the title character in the upcoming revival of “Jessica Jones.” Previously, Jessica Jones starred in her self-titled series on Netflix for three seasons, wrapping up in November 2019.

In “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, she will team up with Matt Murdock, portrayed by Charlie Cox, in their battle against the oppressive Mayor Wilson Fisk. However, it remains unclear if the return of Jessica Jones will take the form of a complete Disney+ series or a standalone Special Presentation similar to “Punisher”.
