In October 2025, Kwame Mbalia’s novel “Star Wars: The Last Order” will unfold a long-anticipated tale featuring Finn and Jannah, post the events from “The Rise of Skywalker.” As per the book’s summary provided by Penguin Random House, the story delves into the characters’ complex histories as former stormtroopers, grappling with their pasts. This narrative promises to address many questions that Star Wars enthusiasts have pondered over for years.
In Star Wars, not every question requires an answer; some mysteries, such as the species of Yoda, may remain unsolved even beyond our lifetimes. However, this new young adult novel has many intriguing aspects, and there are several points about it that readers will want to understand by the end of their reading experience.
1. Is Finn Force-sensitive or not?
It appears that Finn struggled throughout an entire film to disclose his Force-sensitivity to Rey, and based on fan (and John Boyega’s) interpretation, he failed miserably. The movie didn’t reveal this information, but perhaps The Last Order could be the chance to address this widespread speculation and quell fan frustration.
From my perspective, I don’t require scenes showing Finn’s Jedi training or the resolution of his conversation with Rey from The Rise of Skywalker. Instead, a deeper exploration into his connection with the Force – perhaps through his personal experiences and perceptions – would suffice for me. Being Force-sensitive doesn’t necessarily mean one must become a Jedi; it simply heightens their awareness of certain environmental aspects. I’m more interested in understanding Finn’s journey towards embracing this part of himself and whether he will use his abilities for the greater good, rather than the specifics of his training or conversations with Rey.
2. Is Lando Jannah’s dad?
It’s common knowledge that Lando’s little girl was taken away years ago, and he’s spent every day since searching for her. In their fleeting moment together, there were hints – though nothing definitive – suggesting that Jannah could potentially be the child he’s been desperately trying to locate.
Jannah acknowledges that she was separated from her family a considerable time ago and compelled to work for the First Order. However, being Lando’s daughter is not necessarily true – the galaxy is vast, and it’s unusual to presume a connection between two Star Wars characters merely because they share similar physical characteristics or species. Regardless of their relationship, we’ve waited more than five years, and now we’re curious about the truth.
3. Did Rey really stay on Tatooine?
In this book, the focus isn’t solely on Rey; it’s high time for characters such as Finn and Jannah to step into the limelight of Star Wars. Despite being on separate quests, it seems probable that Finn remains deeply concerned about Rey. Surely, we can expect at least a brief mention of her current situation during this story’s timeline, can’t we?
I have a small request, though it might seem a bit trivial given my lingering frustration over how some people incorrectly believed that Rey’s trip to Tatooine at the end of TROS was permanent. I would like this misconception to be corrected definitively. Yet, I am also curious about where her journey has led next. It’s possible that Finn will have his moment in the spotlight, but it doesn’t rule out future Rey-centric stories.
