Season 2 of the Netflix sci-fi series 3 Body Problem is improving in a key way. Based on Cixin Liu’s acclaimed Remembrance of Earth’s Past novels, the show is run by Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The first season, which premiered in 2024, introduced viewers to the complex story of 3 Body Problem, centering on an alien civilization called the San-Ti and their planned invasion of Earth in 400 years.
The first season of 3 Body Problem spent its time building the characters and the show’s complicated backstory. It started by introducing the group of scientist friends – the Oxford Five – including Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo), Jack (John Bradley), Auggie (Eiza González), Jin (Jess Hong), and Will (Alex Sharp). Season 2 will take a different direction.
The story soon became deeply involved with complicated scientific details as the group investigated the San-Ti. Now that we know what the San-Ti are planning after Season 1, the Oxford Five will focus on finding ways to fight back in the upcoming season.
I recently spoke with Jovan Adepo, who plays Saul in 3 Body Problem, and he gave me a fascinating peek behind the curtain. He told me that while the first season was packed with complex scientific ideas, season two is going to shift gears and focus much more on the characters and their individual stories. Apparently, we’re in for a more emotionally driven season, which I think is a smart move.
Jovan Adepo explained that the first season of the show focused on building the world and introducing the complex scientific concepts behind ‘The Three Body Problem.’ He felt that this season is different because, now that viewers understand the background, the story feels much more focused on the characters and their personal experiences.

Adepo explained that the show will delve deeper into the characters’ personal lives, which he believes will help viewers become more invested in the story by allowing them to relate to what the characters are going through.
This season, we delve deeper into the characters’ personal lives. Their choices have a much bigger and more immediate impact on each other, which I think viewers will appreciate. It allows the audience to really understand what’s at stake and connect with the story on a deeper level. While it’s a departure from the first season, it’s a positive change.
According to actor Adepo, viewers will witness a significant change in his character, Saul, after he unexpectedly becomes a Wallfacer at the end of the first season.
I can’t reveal too much, but this season will show a lot of growth for Saul. At the end of Season 1, he was chosen as one of the Wallfacers, a role he wasn’t thrilled about. This season explores whether he rises to the challenge. I can’t say how he approaches it, but filming has been going smoothly, and we’re scheduled to finish in January.
The creators of 3 Body Problem, Benioff, Weiss, and Alexander Woo, have stated that the second season will be based on the second book in the series, The Dark Forest. They aim to adapt the entire story over multiple seasons.
Netflix has announced that Season 3 of 3 Body Problem is planned for release in 2026. This comes after filming for Season 2 is expected to finish in January, according to actor Eiza González. The show, featuring stars like Liam Cunningham, Benedict Wong, and Rosalind Chao, has already been picked up for another season.
Why 3 Body Problem Season 2’s Big Change Is a Good One

The first season of 3 Body Problem had a lot of groundwork to cover, introducing viewers to many characters and complex scientific ideas. Now that the main story – an alien invasion – is set up, the show can focus more on developing its characters, which should improve on some of the criticisms it received in its initial season.
Like Game of Thrones, 3 Body Problem follows several storylines that connect and overlap. Actor Adepo has shared that the second season will focus more on the characters themselves, which is welcome news for viewers who wanted to see deeper connections with them. The first season had to balance developing those personal stories with the demands of the show’s complicated plot.
After a slightly disappointing conclusion to the first season of 3 Body Problem, the Netflix series needs to quickly establish a strong start with its second season.
The first season of 3 Body Problem left viewers with several unanswered questions. We’ll likely see what happens with Saul as a Wallfacer, and Jin will need to come up with a new strategy after the Staircase Project failed, resulting in her friend Will’s brain being sent into space. The show also introduced Thomas Wade’s plan to use cryo-sleep to protect Earth centuries in the future, suggesting the series will jump forward in time.
