Netflix viewers should prepare for a bit of a gloomy weekend, as the top three movies available right now are all on the heavier side. We’re currently in that period between the upbeat holiday season and the arrival of Valentine’s Day rom-coms, so things are a little more serious on the streaming service.
I’ve decided it’s the perfect time to watch some of the more intense movies Netflix has to offer. Luckily, a new original film just arrived, starring two major Hollywood actors. Along with that, there’s an erotic thriller and a sci-fi thriller available, but the latter won’t be on Netflix for much longer.
3. The Rip (2026)
Netflix’s latest big film is The Rip, and it reunites Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The story centers around Miami police officers who discover a massive sum of money during a raid, which quickly leads to suspicion and distrust among them.
In addition to its leads, The Rip features a strong supporting cast. Teyana Taylor recently starred in One Battle After Another and appears alongside Academy Award nominee Steven Yeun. The cast also includes Sasha Calle, known for her role in Supergirl, and Kyle Chandler, who plays Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) in HBO’s Lanterns. The Rip promises to be a gripping and intense series.
2. Bone Lake (2025)
While The Rip is quite intense, the other two films on this list are even more disturbing. If you’re in the mood for a romantic thriller, check out Bone Lake on Netflix. The story centers around a couple, Sage and Diego, whose romantic getaway turns complicated when they’re forced to share a lakeside house with another couple.
The movie Bone Lake starts off normal, but quickly becomes disturbingly creepy with the introduction of a strange couple. Released quietly in theaters in 2025, it’s already gained popularity on streaming services, currently ranking as the 7th most-watched film on Netflix in the US. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth a watch.
1. Donnie Darko (2001)
This weekend, the psychological thriller Donnie Darko is leaving Netflix. Starring a young Jake Gyllenhaal, the Sci-Fi classic will no longer be available after Sunday, January 18th, so you have just two days left to watch or re-watch it.
Donnie Darko follows a troubled teenager who grapples with mental health issues and a predicted apocalypse after narrowly escaping a plane engine crashing into his room. The film then takes him on a bizarre and mind-bending adventure as he discovers his purpose within the vastness of the multiverse. All three films are ideal for a relaxing weekend binge on Netflix.
