28 Years Later writer addresses confusion over 28 Weeks Later ending
28 Years Afterward, author Alex Garland has clarified the ambiguity surrounding the conclusion of its prequel, 28 Weeks Later.
This year, the post-apocalyptic series will be back with its third part, showcasing a fresh group of individuals striving to survive following the devastation caused by the Rage Virus across large parts of the United Kingdom.
2007’s film “28 Weeks Later” suggested that the virus had spread to mainland Europe, but the initial trailer for its sequel implied that the disease was still contained within the UK. This discrepancy left some viewers puzzled, however, director Garland has now explained the plot points more clearly.
28 Years Later and 28 Weeks Later do not contradict each other, but the term ‘canon’ is not one that Danny Boyle frequently uses. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Boyle stated that the two movies are not laid out in a systematic or formulaic manner.
During the interview, Garland, along with producer Andrew Macdonald, delved further into the impending movie’s themes. He mentioned, “COVID-19 wasn’t something I considered because it was still fresh and ongoing, but Brexit was.
[The global perspective towards the UK started to change noticeably.] It was as if the world had subtly repositioned itself, turning away, seemingly disinterested, barely acknowledging the UK.
28 Years Afterward will feature Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell as the main characters. The movie tells the story of a father and son who depart from a secluded island to uncover the ominous truths hidden in the heartland.
The movie is planned as the starting point of a three-part series. Already set for a January 2026 premiere is the sequel titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple“. While Boyle will step aside, Nia DaCosta will direct the second instalment.
28 Years Later is scheduled to be released on June 2o.
