28 Years Later will reportedly follow a boy trying to save his dying mother

As a die-hard fan of post-apocalyptic horror films and someone who has survived multiple rewatches of “28 Days Later,” I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming trilogy, “28 Years Later.” With Danny Boyle and Alex Garland back at the helm, and a stellar cast led by Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jack O’Connell, it’s safe to say that this is going to be a thrilling ride.

Approximately twenty years following its debut in 2002, we’re long overdue for a sequel to the highly praised post-apocalyptic horror film “28 Days Later,” directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Excitingly, the upcoming movie titled “28 Years Later” marks the beginning of a new trilogy that takes place in a world filled with the chilling “rage virus.” As suggested by actor Ralph Fiennes, the initial two films of this trilogy have already been filmed consecutively.

In an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes shared some initial plot details for the upcoming film, which is due to hit cinemas in June 2025. The esteemed stage actor will portray a compassionate doctor who lends aid to a young boy and his ailing mother.

Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.

The quote hints at a revelation about Fiennes’ character, suggesting he’ll eventually be portrayed as a positive influence. Despite his initial unappealing nature, this implies his transformation throughout the films. Since both movies have been filmed, it’s clear that he will reprise his role in the sequel of the trilogy. As for the third movie, his fate remains uncertain.

In the world depicted by the movie, people who survived the rage virus are still battling its effects more than two and a half decades since it initially emerged in Great Britain. By the conclusion of 28 Weeks Later, the virus had managed to infect all of continental Europe, making it impossible to contain any longer.

In the planned trilogy, the second movie is named “28 Days Later Part II: The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta (known for “Candyman”), with a screenplay written by Boyle and Garland. Alongside Fiennes and Murphy, “28 Years Later” will also feature Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jack O’Connell in its cast.

28 Years Later is currently planned to release theatrically on June 20, 2025.
