28 Years Later: The Real Horror Isn’t the Zombies—It’s How the World Gave Up on Britain
Similar to its predecessors, “28 Years Later” maintains a chilling atmosphere. This eagerly awaited 2025 release shares the haunting tension that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland instilled in “28 Days Later”. The zombies in this film are among the most terrifying you’ll encounter on screen, and the pervasive hopelessness is tangible. It wasn’t just the zombies that sent shivers down my spine; the lack of empathy displayed by countries worldwide is equally unsettling.
Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen 28 Years Later!
Great Britain Is Left All Alone To Fend For Itself
In the span of 28 years following the outbreak of the Rage Virus in Britain, the nation has been isolated from the global community. Strict border controls prevent anyone from leaving, while European navies monitor and patrol the coastal waters. The remaining inhabitants find themselves entirely self-reliant.
In simpler terms, certain individuals reside tranquilly on a tiny island near northern England’s coast, establishing a secure little society shielded from mainland perils. Conversely, some survive in a primitive manner amidst the debris of what was once the United Kingdom. The unsettling aspect is that there seems to be no assistance or help being given anywhere within the country. This situation deeply concerns me.

I Understand Why The Rest Of The World Cut Them Off… But…
In the first film spin-off of the series, titled “28 Weeks Later,” there’s a possible continuation of events where Rage, the deadly virus, has spread to continental Europe. In “28 Years Later,” we discover that European countries managed to fend off and halt the spread of the virus, preventing widespread infection. This is certainly good news. However, what followed was far from positive.
In the film “28 Weeks Later“, assistance from the U.S. and NATO is provided to survivors in the UK initially, but after nearly three decades, there’s no aid whatsoever – not even air drops of essential supplies like food and medicine. It’s as if the remaining survivors have been abandoned to their fate. I get that a strict quarantine is necessary, but no help at all, not even the most basic necessities for those who are still alive? That seems harsh, doesn’t it?

The Other Countries Of The World Could Do Something!
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I find myself deeply engrossed in the tale of those remaining on the mainland who seem to have slipped from their full humanity. Meanwhile, the residents of a coastal community are tirelessly striving to preserve theirs. However, as our protagonist Isla (Jodie Comer) grapples with an enigmatic ailment that turns out to be cancer, she encounters unyielding obstacles in obtaining necessary medication to alleviate her suffering.
It deeply troubles me to see such indifference and lack of warmth in this situation. I can’t help but wonder about the compassion of those who aren’t directly affected by the outbreak. It seems plausible that aid could be provided to the desolate region without endangering lives or causing a spread of the virus, so why is there no assistance whatsoever?
As a film enthusiast, I must say that the absence of human compassion in these zombie flicks is downright chilling, if not more so than the undead hordes themselves – be it the bare-boned zombies, alpha zombies, pregnant zombies, or bone collectors. However, I’m hesitant to expect much change in the upcoming sequel, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” set for release next year. Although there might be a glimmer of hope, I find myself remaining skeptical.
