’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Director Wants to Make Live-Action Version of Hit Superhero Series

Nia DaCosta’s new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, opened in theaters on January 16th to a lot of positive buzz. Her previous film, Hedda, was also well-received, helping to revitalize her career after her experience with the underperforming Marvel film, The Marvels. While her attempt at a superhero movie didn’t go as planned, DaCosta still enjoys working within that genre.

In a recent Reddit Q&A, director Nia DaCosta expressed her strong interest in directing a movie based on the popular comic book series Invincible. A fan of both the comics and the animated show, she shared her idea for a film adaptation. DaCosta explained she’d like to create a superhero movie that isn’t afraid to tackle more mature themes, differentiating it from films like The Marvels. She told those participating in the Q&A that…

I’m incredibly passionate about directing a live-action movie based on Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. Both the comic book and animated series are fantastic, and I have a clear vision for bringing that world – and especially the complex relationship between father and son – to life on screen. I’m also drawn to the idea of creating a superhero film that’s genuinely gritty, realistic, and doesn’t shy away from mature themes.

Will An ‘Invincible’ Film Ever Happen?

Amazon Prime Video

Originally appearing in 2003 as a comic book from Image Comics, Invincible was created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. It playfully examined and reimagined superhero stories over 144 issues, finishing in 2018. The comic has since become a popular animated series on Prime Video, premiering in 2021, with a fourth season scheduled for 2026.

In 2017, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg obtained the rights to make a live-action Invincible movie for Universal, planning to produce, write, and direct it. However, the project stalled, and they shifted their focus to the animated series. Robert Kirkman later shared in 2021 that the movie hadn’t been abandoned and Rogen and Goldberg were still attached. More recently, Kirkman suggested that work on the film would restart after the animated series finished its run.

Honestly, it doesn’t shock me at all that Nia DaCosta is potentially directing Invincible. She’s always been upfront about loving comics, and beyond The Marvels, she actually developed a really cool X-Men pitch with Cyclops, Storm, and even Galactus! She’s admitted feeling a bit like a hired gun on The Marvels, but she still seems to be on good terms with Marvel – she even visited the set of Avengers: Doomsday. It’s clear she’s passionate about superheroes, and she could really do something special with Invincible. The only thing I wonder is if a movie is even needed when the animated series is already so fantastic.
