The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will now open in UK cinemas on January 14th, a couple of days before its originally planned date. It’s the fourth film in the 28 Days Later series and a follow-up to the 2025 release, 28 Years Later, and a spooky new trailer has just been released for fans.
The new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, builds on the universe established in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later, but with a fresh and unexpected twist, according to a summary of the plot.
The story continues as Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) enters a surprising new relationship with potentially global repercussions. Meanwhile, Spike (Alfie Williams) has a terrifying encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) that quickly spirals into a desperate struggle for survival.
What to Read Next
In The Bone Temple, the biggest dangers aren’t the infected themselves, but the cruelty and desperation of the people still alive.
Joining Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Rose Williams – who are all returning from 28 Years Later – the new horror film will also feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson reprising his role as Jamie’s father. In an exciting development for the series, Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original 28 Days Later (2002), will return as Jim, a survivor from the initial London outbreak.

Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird, and Maura Bird join the cast as part of Jimmy Crystal’s team.
Following 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple is the second film in a planned three-part series, with the third movie currently being developed. In an interview with IGN in June, producer Danny Boyle hinted at what audiences can expect.
I was so excited to hear Murphy’s coming back! Boyle let slip that he’s involved in the second one, but then he got all worried about revealing too much. He joked he’d be in trouble if he said anything else!

The filmmaker explained that while each movie in the trilogy tells a complete story, each one also sets up the next installment. The project is quite large in scope, but funding for the third film isn’t secured yet. Its approval will likely depend on how well the first movie performs. Everyone involved, including Cillian Murphy, is hoping for a green light if the first film is successful.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will land in UK cinemas on 14 January 2026.
