28 Years Later sequel confirms release date and official title

As someone who has lived through the zombie apocalypse of the 2000s and survived to tell the tale, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel to “28 Years Later”! Having experienced the terror firsthand with its predecessors, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the continuation of this gripping post-apocalyptic saga. The fact that it’s a trilogy and not just a standalone film gives me hope that we’ll finally get some closure on the fate of the United Kingdom and its survivors.

The upcoming movie, which continues the story from “28 Years Later“, has officially announced its release date and title. This new film picks up where the original left off.

28 Years On unfolds as the initial chapter in a fresh trilogy, picking up where 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later left off, chronicling the tale of a devastated United Kingdom overrun by a lethal virus in its aftermath.

As a thrilled fan, I can’t contain my excitement when I share that not only was it revealed that the first two parts of the upcoming trilogy were filmed consecutively, but it turns out that indeed, there’s been a reduced timeframe between their releases – a fact that only fuels my anticipation!

According to Variety’s report, the second film in the upcoming trilogy, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple”, is set to premiere on the big screen on January 16, 2026. This date is approximately seven months after the planned release of its preceding movie.

In a new development, Alex Garland is penning The Bone Temple once more, while Danny Boyle, director of 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, will assume the role of producer for this project. Instead, Nia DaCosta steps in to handle directing responsibilities.

The latest update arrives only a week following the unveiling of the first teaser for “28 Years Later“, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes, and the reprising Cillian Murphy.

In the logline for the movie “28 Years Later“, it’s stated that about three decades have passed since a virus called the rage virus was unleashed from a bioweapons lab. Now, despite being under strict quarantine, certain individuals have discovered means to survive in the midst of the infected population.

A band of survivors dwells on a tiny island linked to the mainland through a fortified bridge. When one of them ventures from the island, delving into the ominous depths of the mainland, they uncover mysteries, marvels, and abominations that have twisted not only the infected but other groups of survivors too.

28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. On the other hand, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will grace the big screen on January 16, 2026.
