28 Years Later ignores one of the biggest reveals of 28 Weeks Later
28 Years Later director Danny Boyle clarified that the third film disregards a major revelation from 28 Weeks Later for storytelling purposes.
The movie titled “28 Years Later,” set to be released on June 20th, serves as the opening installment of an upcoming trilogy. It features notable actors such as Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.
2007 movie “28 Weeks Later” disclosed that certain individuals were naturally immune to the lethal “Rage Virus”.

In a conversation with Collider, Boyle indicated that the upcoming third installment of the series won’t delve into the concept of immunity.
In my fervor, I’d like to share that we opted to continue our trilogy with the initial film serving as our primary inspiration. It wasn’t only about carrying forward the character portrayed by Cillian Murphy, but also delving into the essence of the virus itself – its nature, behavior, and how it responds in various situations.
At the thrilling conclusion of 28 Weeks Later, it emerged that the Rage Virus had infected mainland Europe.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share a perspective on the unusual structure of the third instalment. Director Boyle himself explained that the third film leans more towards being a sequel to “28 Days Later” instead of a direct continuation from “28 Weeks Later.” Here’s his reasoning: “The unique aspect of the first film, and arguably our wisest decision, was its entirely British setting.
He went on saying: “That’s the land we’re talking about. It was astounding to ponder such a potent force erupting exactly there. The people who lived on that land were the ones who needed to address it.
Furthermore, we chose to focus on that aspect specifically. There’s no issue with the movie “28 Weeks Later“. We simply opted not to incorporate those narrative elements into our story. Also, we made a daring decision by announcing at the outset that the Rage Virus had been pushed back from mainland Europe in our tale.
Earlier, Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Years Later, mentioned that the term ‘canon’ doesn’t quite fit with Danny Boyle’s vocabulary when discussing the choice to disregard the cliffhanger ending.
28 Years Later is released in cinemas on 20 June 2025.
