28 Years Later: Danny Boyle Reveals Thrilling First Look at Horror Sequel
In the upcoming film titled “28 Years Later“, Sony Pictures gave a select group of journalists from New York City a sneak peek and the chance to meet its Oscar-winning director. The story follows Jamie (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his 12-year-old son Spike (Alfie Williams), who leave their sanctuary on a Scottish island. During the event, we were granted access to watch the horror sequel‘s opening scene and a substantial portion of the first act. The director also shared insights about how the pandemic shaped the narrative for “28 Years Later“, influencing public responses to crises and its impact in the aftermath.
Once again, the number 28 is significant. A fascinating aspect was that it had been 28 years since the first COVID outbreak. Reflecting on this period, we reacted instinctively to the guidelines given at the time – wearing gloves for interactions and disinfecting groceries. Over time, our behavior adapted to the situation. In the initial film, characters are extremely cautious, fearful of any form of blood contamination. However, in ’28 Years Later’, they start taking more risks as humans tend to do. You’ll notice at the beginning a causeway island where the inhabitants have lived for a long time. They live a unique lifestyle characterized by intense isolation. They’ve made their own decisions about how they want to live, and the rest of the story is up to you to uncover.
Later on, Boyle shared a humorous anecdote regarding the initial title of the first movie, 28 Days Later. The studio found this name problematic as it bore too much resemblance to Sandra Bullock’s film, 28 Days, a drama centered around substance abuse.
Check it out. It’s nearly pre-internet era. People would assume they were coming for a Sandra Bullock film. So I used to start by saying, if anyone is here for Sandra Bullock…(laughs). We don’t need to worry about that issue anymore!
The director went on to explain the true source of inspiration behind the movie’s title and why it felt particularly relevant when it was chosen.
In the past, when you bought something and later decided to return it, you had 28 days to do so in order to get your money back. This practice was quite common back then. Although it isn’t used as much anymore, that’s where the idea of a return policy originated.
The Footage Shown Revealed a Visceral & Intense Continuation From Danny Boyle
After providing more specific information, Danny Boyle discussed shooting movies on Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, wrapping up his presentation. Earlier, Roman Polanski had utilized the same location for filming “Cul-de-sac” back in 1966.
This place is home to roughly 150 residents, making it a popular tourist destination. However, due to the tides, it becomes deserted during certain times. Consequently, they experience a deep sense of isolation for half the day. The other half, they thrive in an atmosphere reminiscent of bustling Rome, with tourists flooding in.
Speaking hyperbolically, the audience wasn’t just impressed – they were absolutely blown away by the trailer. The anticipation and excitement you’ll feel when the movie hits the big screen is going to be even more intense. No spoilers here, but let me tell you, the footage we saw was raw, gripping, and a perfect extension of the storyline. So, get ready for “28 Years Later,” set to hit theaters on June 20th, courtesy of Sony Pictures. Expectations should be sky-high for this one!
