Cillian Murphy shared encouraging news about the planned 28 Years Later trilogy. He discussed the project in an interview with The Times, while promoting his new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, and gave an update on its current status.

The third movie is still being planned, according to a recent report. When asked if it would actually happen, Murphy said he’s eager to return, saying, “Hopefully!” While he seems enthusiastic, the studio hasn’t announced any firm plans for production yet.

I was so excited when I heard the third movie was already greenlit, even before “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” hit theaters! That second film, from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, was fantastic, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about where the story goes next. But honestly, since the movie came out, Sony hasn’t said anything about their plans, which is a little frustrating as a fan!

Earlier this year, World of Reel reported that Sony Pictures was hesitant to start work on a third film in the 28 Years Later series. This was because the recent sequel, The Bone Temple, didn’t do well financially, earning only about $57 million worldwide despite positive reviews, while costing around $63 million to make.

The publication also reported that Netflix wanted to make the next installment. But that deal fell through, as director Danny Boyle preferred to release the final movie in theaters.

Although a firm release date hasn’t been set, Murphy’s comments suggest the project is moving forward with optimism.
