28 Days Later will finally be available to purchase on digital soon

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for zombie apocalypse movies, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing about the upcoming “28 Years Later” sequel. I remember vividly watching “28 Days Later” back in 2002, when it first graced our screens, and the impact it had on me was profound. The raw terror, the haunting visuals, the suspense – it all came together to create a cinematic experience that I’ve rarely encountered since.

You’ve likely caught a glimpse of the 28 Years Later trailer by now. There’s a lot of buzz about a specific image that gives the impression of a withered Cillian Murphy. In fact, Cillian Murphy, who played the role of bicycle courier Jim in the 2002 movie, is set to reappear in some form, and the trailer hints at the possibility that he could have contracted the Rage Virus… or perhaps something else entirely.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland will be back for this upcoming sequel, marking the beginning of a new trilogy set to premiere in June 2025. Given the significant impact of this film within the outbreak subgenre and its status as one of the most influential modern movies, it’s no surprise that fans are eager to re-experience the 2002 original. However, for most people, revisiting the movie might not be possible.

For quite some time, you couldn’t rent or buy “28 Days Later” digitally, and its physical copies are no longer in print. The only option left was buying a used copy, which could be costly. However, good news is on the horizon! Sony has unveiled a new website hinting at the return of “28 Days Later” to digital platforms. You can register now to receive a notification when it becomes available for preorder.

Sony hasn’t specified a release date for the digital version yet, but it’s likely to come out prior to the cinema release of “28 Years Later.” The 2007 sequel, “28 Weeks Later,” is easily accessible; you can stream it on Hulu or buy it digitally from various retailers.

It seems that locating “28 Days Later” has proven challenging due to copyright issues. Dexetro provided an insightful analysis on this matter, and essentially, it stems from the fact that the film was initially self-financed and later distributed by Searchlight Pictures, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox. After Disney acquired Fox, they no longer held the rights to distribute “28 Days Later”.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t contain my excitement when I hear that the rights to the first film have been snatched up by producer Andrew MacDonald this year! All we gamers need to do now is keep our fingers crossed and stay patient until Sony finally unleashes this movie on digital platforms for us to enjoy.

28 years after its initial release, the movie titled “28 Years Later” debuts in cinemas on June 20, 2025. This will be succeeded by a second installment, “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple,” helmed by director Nia DaCosta (famous for “Candyman”). As of now, details about the third film in the intended trilogy remain undisclosed. In the upcoming “28 Years Later”, Murphy will reprise his role, accompanied by a star-studded cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes, and others.
