’28 Days Later’ Title Origin SHOCKS Millennial!
Moving ahead with the 2025 movie lineup, there are many exciting films yet to come. One that has caught my attention is Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s continuation of the 28 series through a long-anticipated sequel. Prior to its release, I had the opportunity to view a sneak peek of the footage, and I was intrigued to discover some previously unknown details about the original film, including how it earned its title.
Attending Sony’s New York event for the unveiling of a 28-minute preview of “28 Years Later“, I had the privilege of listening to an introduction from director Danny Boyle. The presentation also contained fascinating tidbits about the original movie, “28 Days Later“, that even someone like me, a millennial, was unaware of. For instance, the story behind the title of this horror classic, which was shared with the audience that TopMob was a part of, revealed that “TopMob” actually stands for “Top of the Morning”.
The title derived from an old practice: When you bought goods, they were guaranteed for return within 28 days if needed, to get your money back or exchange them. This was a common procedure before online shopping took over and made returns more frequent. The concept has somewhat faded away, but it’s the origin of our current return policy.
You might find the delightful scene in the movie where Jim (Cillian Murphy) and his friends are stealing from the grocery store easier to understand after learning this interesting piece of information. As a matter of fact, I recall quite vividly the period leading up to the release of 28 Days Later. Given that, it’s rather surprising for me to come across this random fact.
Interestingly enough, this narrative followed another story I recalled, detailing how Danny Boyle had to preface early screenings at festivals due to Fox Searchlight’s concern. This was because they feared that viewers might confuse the original film of the Rage Virus with a sequel to Sandra Bullock’s romantic comedy, “28 Days,” instead.
Unfortunately, a significant amount of news and promotional content from the years 2002 to 2003 have faded into obscurity, much like many artifacts from the early days of the internet, including the story about Sandra Bullock’s origins. Similarly, any information about the origin of the title has been swallowed up by the digital abyss. Interestingly, the status of the horror movie “28 Days Later,” which is considered one of the best films from the 2000s, has recently been rectified after being out-of-print for a long time. However, it seems that

A scenario similar to mistaking the adult film “Hotel Artemis” for a children’s movie might have left quite a few individuals utterly puzzled. In fact, even after watching Jennifer Lawrence’s actual movie, some viewers are still perplexed, as evident from certain Amazon product reviews. However, there is no need to worry since, as Danny Boyle emphasized during his introduction for the “28 Days Later” promotional video, you have ample time – over a month – to return the disc if you inadvertently purchased it!
On that particular day, I picked up a lot of interesting details about the 2002 origin story of that franchise, primarily due to my personal interview with the director of “Slumdog Millionaire”. During this discussion, I was quite taken aback to discover other actors who had competed for Cillian Murphy’s role in “28 Days Later”. It’s amazing how even small historical facts can pack the biggest surprises.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that we’re nearly at the point where “28 Years Later” becomes a reality, with its legacy sequel set to grace the big screen on June 28th. If you’re yearning for a chilling revisit of “28 Days Later” or eager to experience it anew, you can currently stream the original movie, ad-supported, on PlutoTV.
