28 Days Later coming to digital before the New Year thanks to record-breaking sequel trailer
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has weathered countless apocalypses both virtual and cinematic, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of diving back into the post-apocalyptic world of “28 Days Later“. The original film left an indelible mark on my horror-loving heart, and the promise of a return to this terrifying yet captivating universe has me eagerly awaiting June 20, 2025.
The 2002 post-apocalyptic movie titled “28 Days Later” began by showing infected chimpanzees breaking free from captivity, subsequently releasing a horrifying and destructive virus that devastated Greater Britain completely. Screenwriter Alex Garland collaborated with director Danny Boyle on the script for this film, and they are reuniting for the upcoming production “28 Years Later,” marking the start of a planned trilogy.
In the 2002 film, Cillian Murphy portrayed Jim, a bicycle messenger who finds himself in a deserted hospital after waking up from a coma, 28 days following an outbreak of the “Rage Virus” caused by escaped chimps. This virus had infected countless individuals and exposed thousands more to it. By the conclusion of both the original movie and its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, there appeared to be mere flickers of optimism regarding humanity’s ongoing existence.
Enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated a new installment of this influential series, and we’ll fulfill that wish the following summer when the initial film hits theaters on June 20, 2025. This will be followed by the sequel titled “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple” directed by Nia DaCosta.
It seems that the overwhelming success and popularity of the 28 Years Later trailer, which has become the top-watched horror trailer for 2024 and is second only to the It: Chapter Two trailer in terms of all-time views, according to Deadline, prompted Sony to swiftly reintroduce the original film 28 Days Later back into the market.
Additionally, the outlet offered view counts for several well-known horror previews, including “The Nun” (55.4 million), “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (55.2 million), and “Smile 2” (33.1 million). However, the preview for “28 Years Later” surpassed all these movies in terms of trailer viewership.
It would be delightful for both newcomers and longtime enthusiasts to have another chance to experience the film 28 Days Later, before its sequel arrives in 2025. While 28 Weeks Later has been easily accessible, the original film had some complications due to the Disney/Fox merger and rights issues that prevented it from being released digitally until now.
28 Years Later is releasing on June 20, 2025.
