Nintendo is generally known for making games everyone can enjoy, but they’ve also released quite a few games rated for mature audiences. Titles like Bayonetta 3 and Emio – The Smiling Man fall into this category. However, nothing compares to Conker’s Bad Fur Day, which remains Nintendo’s most well-known mature-rated game.
Released on March 5, 2001, for the Nintendo 64 towards the end of its life, Conker’s Bad Fur Day didn’t sell well, partly because it wasn’t widely advertised due to its mature content. Despite this, the game was praised at the time, and today, after 25 years, it deserves recognition for how daring and original it was.
Conker’s Bad Fur Day Was Made for Experienced Gamers
Like many games from Rare, Conker’s Bad Fur Day is set in a colorful, imaginative world. But what sets it apart is its surprisingly crude and often shocking humor.
The Fairy Panther King’s Kingdom is ruled by the rather clueless Panther King. He’s so lacking in common sense that when he breaks a table leg, he seriously considers using a red squirrel to hold it up.
Interestingly, the only resident of the Panther Kingdom small enough to use as a table decoration is Conker, a red squirrel who was returning home from a night out. After having a bit too much to drink, he gets lost and wanders into the dangerous part of the kingdom.
Soon after, Conker meets Birdy, a talking scarecrow who teaches him a key part of how the game works: buttons do different things depending on the situation. Usually, pressing the ‘B’ button makes Conker swing a frying pan, which can be useful at times.
When you’re in a specific situation within the game, the ‘B’ button becomes incredibly versatile. It can be used for almost anything, whether it’s simple actions like using a slingshot, silly things like throwing toilet paper, or even performing in-game actions like getting your character drunk.
As the game goes on, these special buttons become incredibly useful. Conker faces many different challenges that require them, like avoiding wasps, cheering up sunflowers, giving cows prune juice, stomping on baby dinosaurs, and even using the dinosaurs to tear apart cavemen. But the most bizarre task of all is dealing with a huge mountain of singing poop!
What it all comes down to is getting Conker back together with his girlfriend, Berri. But it’s not going to be a simple journey! He’s got a war to fight, and he’s going to witness some really tough stuff – friends and enemies getting hurt, and just a lot of shocking things. Honestly, Conker’s Bad Fur Day isn’t your average Nintendo game, that’s for sure!
Conker Wasn’t Always So Audacious
Conker first appeared in a game alongside Banjo from Banjo-Kazooie. The developers at Rare, also known for Diddy Kong Racing, were charmed by Conker’s adorable design and decided to create a game starring him.
In 1999, Rare released Conker’s Pocket Tales for the Game Boy Color. It’s a simple action-adventure game where Conker sets out to save Berri from the clutches of the Evil Acorn.
Critics weren’t very impressed with Conker’s Pocket Tales, so Rare decided to completely redesign its sequel, which became Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The original plan for the sequel, once called Twelve Tales: Conker 64, was to create another family-friendly platformer similar to games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64.
The game was primarily aimed at adult players, which explains its very mature content. It was so explicit, in fact, that Nintendo provided almost no advertising, limiting promotion to late-night spots on channels like Comedy Central.
Despite receiving excellent reviews – earning a 92/100 on Metacritic – Conker’s Bad Fur Day didn’t sell very well, with only 55,000 copies purchased. This poor performance played a role in the eventual split between Nintendo and Rare, as Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002.
Although Conker’s Bad Fur Day wasn’t a huge commercial hit, it’s still remembered for being bold and unique, and that’s led to continued recognition. A remastered version called Conker: Live & Reloaded came out in 2005 for the Xbox, featuring improved graphics and the ability to play online with others.
