25 best horror movies of the 2020s (so far)

As a self-proclaimed aficionado of all things chilling and spine-tingling, I must say that the horror movie landscape of the 2020s has been nothing short of extraordinary! From the gripping suspense of “The Black Phone” to the supernatural thrills of “Talk to Me,” these films have kept me on the edge of my seat and left me gasping for more.

2010s was an impressive decade for horror movies, but the 2020s are shaping up to be even more outstanding. Ever since January 1, 2020, we’ve been treated to fantastic horror productions, and there’s still a wealth of exciting content yet to come, as the current decade doesn’t conclude until December 31, 2029.

The Call (2020)

“The Call, undoubtedly one of the greatest Korean horror films ever made, tells a chilling tale that intertwines the lives of two women residing in the same house. In contemporary times (2019), we find Kim Seo-yeon, while Oh Young-sook dwells in the past (1999).”

Through a time-defying phone, the women forge a strong friendship. However, Seo-yeon uncovers a shocking truth: Young-sook isn’t who she pretends to be. In reality, she is a ruthless serial killer, determined to alter her own destiny, willing to jeopardize Seo-yeon’s life in the process.

The Dark and the Wicked (2020)

“The Dark and the Wicked” refers to a chilling supernatural horror movie featuring siblings Louise and Michael. Upon visiting their isolated farm to care for their ailing father, they encounter unsettling and frightening incidents. As their mother’s actions grow increasingly strange, they become convinced that an evil force is targeting them and their kin.

Fear Street trilogy (2021)

Netflix was confident that it had three successful productions when it launched the Fear Street trilogy in July 2021. The series, comprising Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666, are all interconnected films.

In Part 1, a band of teenagers confronted a malevolent entity that had been causing chaos in their quaint town of Shadyside. Meanwhile, Part 2 transported audiences to the 1970s at a summer camp where the fun was disrupted as a cold-blooded killer started a deadly rampage.

In conclusion, the third installment transports us back to the 17th century to uncover the root cause of the Shadyside curse that has long haunted the town. Interestingly, the third and final movie also leaps forward to the ’90s, showcasing the same original group of teens from part 1 banding together to finally break the curse.

The Black Phone (2021)

In the groovy ’70s, I find myself as a 13-year-old gamer named Finney, snatched by a chilling local baddie called “The Grabber,” notorious for his brutal ways. Locked away in his soundproof basement, I stumble upon an enigmatic phone that connects me to the ghostly voices of The Grabber’s past victims. Using their spectral guidance, I concoct a cunning escape plan to break free from this terrifying ordeal.

Talk to Me (2022)

After finding a method to communicate with the spirit realm using an embalmed hand, a band of adolescents repeatedly indulge in this practice, unaware of the potentially harmful and unexpected repercussions. Tragically, when one of them pushes their limits while summoning spirits, they unwittingly release malevolent supernatural powers into existence.

X (2022)

In 1979, the story unfolds as a group of actors and crew members venture to a secluded Texas farm belonging to an older couple. Their aim is to film an adult movie, but upon arrival, they are drawn into a deadly struggle when the elderly couple begins a murderous rampage, systematically eliminating the intruders.

Barbarian (2022)

A non-barbarian encounters a young woman named Tess who finds herself in a predicament upon reaching her rented abode. To her surprise, someone else – a man named Keith – has unwittingly reserved the same house. With no other alternatives, she chooses to spend the night at the house with Keith. Unbeknownst to her, this seemingly ordinary dwelling conceals a troubled past and harbors an ominous presence.

When Evil Lurks (2023)

In a secluded Argentine village nestled in the countryside, Pedro and Jimi, two brothers, must confront a chilling outbreak of demonic possessions that’s been sweeping through their community like wildfire. The ensemble cast includes Ezequiel Rodríguez, Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater, and Marcelo Michinaux in this spine-tingling supernatural horror movie.

Scream VI (2023)

In the sequel to the 2022 horror hit, Scream VI, we find ourselves revisiting the lives of Sam, Tara, Chad, and Mindy, survivors of the Woodsboro massacre who have settled in New York City. However, their peace is short-lived as a fresh Ghostface killer surfaces, once again threatening their lives.

Abigail (2024)

In a plot twist, when a team of six expert criminals decide to abduct the powerful underworld figure’s young daughter for ransom, thinking it would be a simple task, they underestimate the situation. This proves to be a grave mistake as they discover that the girl is not just an ordinary child but a bloodthirsty vampire.

Longlegs (2024)

As a fervent admirer, let me express that the movie “Longlegs” has been lauded by critics, and rightfully so – it’s an exceptional horror flick. The narrative centers around Lee Harker, an inexperienced FBI agent, who is tasked with an intriguing assignment: hunting down a notorious occult murderer known as Longlegs, before he embarks on another bloodbath.
