24 Years Later, Firefly Finds Redemption on Prime Video

Before becoming famous in shows like Castle and recently appearing as Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman, Nathan Fillion led a band of outlaws in a beloved science fiction western. He played Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds in Firefly, which is now gaining popularity on streaming services over twenty years after its cancellation.

Despite only running for one season, Firefly remains incredibly popular with viewers. As of January 13th, FlixPatrol reports it’s the 10th most-watched show on Prime Video worldwide. It’s also gaining traction in the U.S., currently ranking at No. 23 on Prime Video’s top 25 list. The show featured a talented cast including Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Ron Glass, and Sean Maher.

Despite only airing for one season in 2002, Firefly won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in 2003. The show centered on the adventures of the crew aboard the Serenity, a spaceship, as they navigated a futuristic world inspired by the Wild West. A film continuation of the series, also titled Firefly, was released in 2005. The show remains popular today, with a 96% audience score and a 77% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Though it didn’t initially find a large audience, Firefly has become a beloved show thanks to its dedicated fanbase. The story continued in comic book form, first with a series published by Dark Horse Comics from 2005 to 2017. Later, in 2018, Boom! Studios took over publishing their own Firefly comics, which are still available today.

The series, expected to premiere this summer on HBO and HBO Max, will feature Nathan Fillion returning as Guy Gardner. He’ll be joined by Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

Nathan Fillion, star of the popular show ‘The Rookie,’ has shared his deep connection to his character, Officer Nolan, and admitted he doesn’t foresee ever letting go of the role. In a recent interview with People, he revealed what he plans to do when the show ultimately finishes its run.

He said he’d love to either teach acting, especially how to perform while seemingly preoccupied, or run a fun sunset boat trip where everyone still called him ‘Captain.’ He feels very lucky to do what he loves – acting and storytelling – but also acknowledges the strange side of fame. He thinks the entertainment industry is a little bit crazy and unpredictable.

I’m a huge fan of The Rookie, and I was so excited to hear Nathan Fillion say he’d love the show to run for at least ten more seasons! He envisions wrapping things up around then, maybe passing the torch, and then enjoying a relaxed retirement. He’d still be around, visiting the set and maybe even popping up in one of the four or five Rookie spin-offs that are doing so well. And when he’s not working on all that, he just wants to chill in his beach house – sounds like a perfect plan to me!
