23 Years Later, Fans Still Want a Treasure Planet Live-Action Series
It’s no surprise that Disney has been facing criticism for its recent live-action adaptations of classic movies, as they haven’t fared particularly well. Admittedly, some of these films required a contemporary makeover to reflect evolving values and representation. However, modernization doesn’t automatically equate to quality, as demonstrated by the latest Snow White film. Despite the mixed response to Disney’s princess remakes, there’s one property that fans are undoubtedly excited about for a live-action reboot.
Treasure Planet, despite not performing well at the box office, has endured over time, garnering praise from fans spanning various age groups and even cultivating a dedicated fanbase for nearly a quarter of a century after its debut. The film is unique in that it skillfully blends elements of the timeless novel Treasure Island, while infusing Disney’s renowned animation with captivating visuals of space and seafaring adventure, creating an extraordinary tribute to both genres. If Disney were to take a brief pause from reimagining their fairytales, they might find that a live-action adaptation of one of their rare sci-fi properties would be an excellent choice for such treatment, potentially marking a departure from the string of moderately successful films that have preceded it.
Treasure Planet is an Epic and Heartfelt Tale of Space Pirates
For those needing a reminder or visual confirmation, the animated movie titled “Treasure Planet” revolves around the character Jim Hawkins. He resides at an inn on planet Montressor with his mother and longs for excitement due to his ordinary life. Despite having a loving home, he is captivated by tales of cosmic pirates and their ships that resemble 18th-century sailing vessels. One enigma that particularly interests him is the legend of Captain Flint, a notorious pirate whose supposed treasure trove of gold is hidden in an uncharted planet called “Treasure Planet.
Intrigue would be stirred within Jim as he was handed a map believed to navigate to Treasure Planet by a dying pirate, cautioning him about “the Cyborg.” With an adventure before them, Jim along with his comrade, Doctor Doppler, assembled a team and embarked on a journey to locate the planet. Upon arrival, Jim established a close bond with the ship’s cook, John Silver, who eventually was unveiled as the cyborg Jim had been cautioned about, having secretly amassed his pirate crew aboard to orchestrate a rebellion and seize control of the ship and its treasure. Through cleverness and intelligence, Jim ultimately uncovered that Treasure Planet was, in fact, a colossal device capable of opening gateways to various locations across the known cosmos, explaining Captain Flint’s mysterious appearances and disappearances.
Flint’s passion for amassing his fortune was equally matched by his obsession in safeguarding it. The entire setup where he hid his treasure was primed to explode if anyone dared to intrude. Assisted by his friends and Silver, who at that time had grown to genuinely care for Jim and prioritize his life over monetary gains, the team managed to evade the self-destruct mechanism and make their way back home. Silver slipped away before he could be apprehended, but not without giving Jim a portion of the treasure to aid in rebuilding his life into something more prosperous. The narrative concludes with Jim finally acknowledging his potential and deciding to enroll at the Interstellar Academy with aspirations of becoming a naval officer someday.
Disney’s Treasure Planet is Perfect for a Live-Action Series Adaptation
Essentially, this tale brims with swift-moving action sequences, vividly depicted locations, and a compelling character journey rooted in the blossoming mutual admiration and affection between Jim and Silver. Both characters experienced personal growth, setting aside their trivial desires to discover what truly mattered to them. This transformation not only rescued and altered their lives but also gave depth to the story. The conclusion was bittersweet, with the treasure being misplaced and Jim and Silver’s permanent separation ensuring they would never cross paths again. However, this melancholic twist adds authenticity to the movie adaptation, as it doesn’t shy away from tackling more complex narratives.
Essentially, making Treasure Planet into a live-action film might not pose too much of a challenge for Disney, considering that the process could potentially be simpler than animating it. To put things in perspective, Treasure Planet is still the costliest traditionally animated movie ever made, with around $140 million spent on its production. This hefty budget was due to the combination of 2D and 3D computer animation. In recent years, it seems plausible that Disney could replicate this process, but with a more unique visual style for Treasure Planet.
The actions shown by Jim in the movie aren’t particularly challenging to replicate or improve upon in real life. From navigating a pirate-infested ship, space battles, and dodging black holes and exploding space stations, Treasure Planet isn’t an unattainable goal for a remake. It would be wise for someone in a higher position to consider if fans might appreciate a remake of one of Disney’s beloved classics. And trust me, they definitely would.
Treasure Planet Would Be a Worthy Break from Live-Action Fantasy Remakes
One compelling reason for remaking this movie stands out: it offers a fresh departure from the trend of Disney reimagining its past hits for contemporary audiences. In contrast, all the live-action Disney movies thus far have been adaptations of their classic Disney Princess tales, with rare exceptions like The Lion King and Treasure Planet. However, Treasure Planet diverges significantly more than either of these. Set in space, it’s completely detached from Earth, featuring a multitude of alien characters who don’t resemble humans physically. This film appeals to those with fond memories of old movies as well as fans of science fiction.
This movie’s action surpasses many other live-action adaptations that have been produced. It offers thrilling scenes such as high-speed chases on rocket-powered technology, dodging perils in space, fighting bloodthirsty pirates, and navigating treacherous traps. Treasure Planet didn’t shy away from violence, and a live-action remake could amplify this, possibly portraying the repercussions of such situations more effectively than animation ever has. Lastly, it would be breathtaking to watch on the big screen. The animated version was beautiful, but a live-action series would allow characters to interact with moving landscapes rather than mostly admiring stationary artwork.
A powerful reimagining, intriguing plot developments, distinct aesthetics and characters, as well as enough fan affection to make a rerelease worth anticipating, characterizes the upcoming remake of this production. Not only does it take advantage of Disney’s current trend, but it also offers an opportunity to correct past missteps. Moreover, it promises to offer new viewers a memorable cinematic journey filled with emotion and action, potentially igniting a love for science fiction in the younger generation while rekindling interest in the original works that inspired this film. In essence, Treasure Planet could be the solution for those who have yet to experience its timeless charm, if only they could witness firsthand just how much affection it continues to garner after over two decades.
