As a huge MCU fan, I’m really excited about 2026! It looks like Marvel is bringing things back to basics, focusing on the original Avengers team. With the Multiverse Saga heading towards its big finish, we’re going to see at least five of those classic heroes return – and it sounds like they’ll be involved in multiple films, which is awesome!
Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe began with The Fantastic Four: First Steps and will culminate in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. However, 2026 is set to be a particularly exciting year for Marvel, with the return of beloved Avengers actors in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, hitting theaters July 31st, and Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release December 18th.
As a longtime MCU watcher, I have to say, the promise of the multiverse is really starting to pay off! While we don’t have all the details yet – it’s still unclear exactly how these actors will fit into everything or which versions of their characters they’ll be playing – seeing these five familiar faces returning is genuinely thrilling. It’s a huge boost for fans like me who’ve been following the MCU for years.
5 Original Avengers Stars Returning in 2026
Robert Downey Jr.
Marvel fans widely believe Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as the villain Doctor Doom. Though he’s the main villain in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, he’s already made appearances – in a post-credits scene for The Fantastic Four: First Steps and potentially on a Fantastic Four ship in the Thunderbolts trailer. Now, fans are wondering if he’ll show up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, either during the movie itself or in a post-credits scene. There’s also speculation about whether Downey Jr. might play a different version of Doctor Doom or even a heroic role in the multiverse-spanning Doomsday storyline.
Chris Evans
One of the biggest questions for Marvel fans is whether Chris Evans will return as Captain America in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Despite repeated denials from Evans himself, rumors persist. Fueling the speculation, he recently reprised his role as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Hayley Atwell, who played Peggy Carter, is confirmed to appear in a 2026 film. Plus, Marvel hasn’t explained what happened to Captain America after Endgame. Some rumors even suggest Evans might play a different version of Steve Rogers, known as Nomad. There are several possibilities for his return to the MCU in 2026, and it remains to be seen if any of them will come true.
Chris Hemsworth
While many of his original Avengers colleagues have finished with their roles, Chris Hemsworth is continuing Thor’s journey after Endgame, having already appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder and with a confirmed return in Avengers: Doomsday (you can find a list of 61 confirmed and rumored stars for Avengers 5 here). It will be fascinating to see how Thor interacts with alternate versions of his former teammates, such as Robert Downey Jr.’s version of the character, and Doomsday could finally bring him back together with his brother, Loki.
Mark Ruffalo
Mark Ruffalo, known for playing Hulk in the Disney+ series She-Hulk, will appear in the 2026 Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie alongside Tom Holland. Interestingly, he might be playing a different version of the Hulk than the more controlled “Smart Hulk” we’ve seen since Avengers: Endgame. Rumors suggest he could be portraying the original, more aggressive “Savage Hulk” in Spider-Man 4. It’s still unclear which version of the Hulk – Smart, Savage, or a new one – Ruffalo will play in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Samuel L. Jackson
Sources suggest Nick Fury’s story isn’t finished in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although Marvel hasn’t officially announced his involvement, Samuel L. Jackson is reportedly being considered for the 2026 film Doomsday, potentially connecting the older and newer phases of the MCU. There’s also speculation that Fury might confront Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) following her declaration that the Thunderbolts are the New Avengers in the 2025 movie Thunderbolts.
